Unexplained Sound Phenomena: Mysterious Sounds from the Depths of the Sea, Land, and Radio Frequencies

Jakarta

Scientists observed a number of unusual sound phenomena. Strange sounds are heard from the depths of the sea, land, radio frequency, to the surface of the Moon.

This mysterious sound phenomenon is investigated by scientists to find a scientific answer. However, most of these strange sounds are difficult to explain until now.

Here are 10 reported mysterious sound phenomena, ranging from hums, noise, to bangs, summarized by detikINET from various sources.

1. Upsweep

The upsweep sound was detected in August 1991 in Pacific waters and lasted a few seconds at a time. Scientists call this a long string of sounds they call narrow-band upsweeping.

The upsweep was detected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) autonomous equatorial hydrophone circuit. This sound came when the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory began recording its sound surveillance system, SOSUS.

The sourcing rate is quite high and records have been sourced throughout the Pacific. NOAA scientists and researchers speculate that the sound is due to underwater volcanic activity.

2. ‘Bloop’ and ‘Julia’

The ‘bloop’ sound was first heard by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 1997. According to researchers, it is a strange, loud, ultra-low frequency sound that explodes through the south Pacific Ocean.

A similar sound was recorded on 1 March 1999, but this time it sounded like she was calling the name ‘Julia’. The sound is thought to have come from an area located between the Bransfield Strait and Cape Adare. That said, this was caused by a large iceberg that ran aground in Antarctica.

3. Hum

A number of people in various countries, especially in the UK, US, Australia and Canada report being able to hear a faint, low-pitched strange sound. This mysterious sound is nicknamed ‘Hum’.

According to reports, as quoted by Live Science, the sound sounds like a persistent and invasive low-frequency hum, rumble, or hum, but not everyone can hear it.

Hum does not appear to be a single phenomenon, as its cause is associated with a variety of factors, including a local mechanical source, often from an industrial plant, as well as manifestations of tinnitus or other biologic hearing effects.

4. Whale 52-Hertz

The 52-hertz whale is the loneliest whale in the world, having no mates or pod at all because it has a different sound frequency from any other pod in the middle of the ocean.

The 52-hertz whale was first recorded in 1989 by an American military network tracking the sounds of nuclear submarines. A marine biota researcher named Dr. William Watkins of the Oceanographic Institution Woods Hole was the first to discover this unique whale.

It has a unique high voice with a main overtone at 52 hertz. Most blue whales speak with sounds at a frequency between 10 and 40 hertz. That’s why the 52-hertz whale was isolated. The sound frequency of male whales can only be captured by radio sonar ships and submarines.

5. Ghost Radio UBV-76

In the late 1970s, a radio station in Russia known as UBV-76 confused listeners. This radio broadcast has an enigmatic coded transmission. Until now we don’t know who broadcast it, so it is called ghost radio.

The UBV-76 makes scary sounds with a signature hum and intermittent voice message. Because of this, UBV-76 sparked various speculations among amateur radio enthusiasts and conspiracy theorists.
