“Unanswered Questions and Omissions: The Alsterdorf Rampage Investigation”

Status: 04/15/2023 08:40 a.m

The background to the rampage in Alsterdorf, in which a total of eight people died in a Jehovah’s Witnesses community center, has still not been clarified. But new details become known almost every day, in which the Hamburg security authorities in particular do not cut a good figure. What else has to happen for this case to have consequences? NDR 90.3 police reporter Ingmar Schmidt asks that in his commentary.

At first it was all about the book that the assassin had published, a confused, religious manifesto that the police officers from the responsible weapons authority had not found on the Internet during an inspection. Then came out the officers knew the book, but had not read it. A communication breakdown, according to the Hamburg police. But she herself did not admit the mistake, which only became known after a small request from the left.

More and more omissions become known

We’ve been seeing this pattern for weeks now: more and more omissions are becoming known – another example: One of the officials of the weapons authority was himself a former shooting trainer at the Hanseatic Gun Club, i.e. where the gunman had also obtained his license. And the policeman apparently didn’t think it was necessary to pass on information about Philipp F.’s dangerousness. The police or the interior authorities are not telling us that either, but journalists found out.

Dealing with mistakes leaves you speechless

A killing spree that kills eight is a terrible tragedy. One thing is clear: a whole series of mistakes had been made beforehand, otherwise it would not have gotten this far. Just dealing with these mistakes leaves you speechless, because everything only comes to light in bits and pieces, the police and interior authorities have so far hardly contributed to the clarification. The CDU and the left also vehemently criticize this salami tactic.

When will Tschentscher comment on this?

I ask myself: Does anyone ever think about what these mishaps, which are gradually becoming known, actually trigger in the affected families and friends of the victims? And I also ask myself: When will Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) comment on this – and how long does he actually want to watch this unworthy spectacle?
