UN Secretary General Urges US to Immediately Lift Sanctions Against Iran

NEW YORK – Secretary General of the United Nations , Antonio Guterres has appealed to the government of the President United States of America (USA) , Joe Biden to lift or remove all sanctions against Iran. The lifting of sanctions was part of the 2015 nuclear deal.

In a report to the UN Security Council, Guterres also urged the US to extend waivers related to oil trade with Iran and fully renew waivers for nuclear non-proliferation projects.

“I call on the US to lift or ignore the sanctions outlined in the plan,” said Guterres, who also called on Iran to return to full implementation of the deal.

“I continue to believe that a full restoration of the deal remains the best way to ensure that Iran’s nuclear program remains exclusively peaceful.” Also read: President Biden Reassures Israel: Iran Will Never Get Nuclear Weapons!

The UN Security Council will reportedly discuss Guterres’ biennial report on the implementation of the 2015 resolution enshrining the nuclear deal between Iran, the US, France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China.

Guterres’ call to Washington comes amid talks to revive the deal. The talks took place in Vienna, Austria and according to the officials involved there has been progress in the talks. Also read: NATO Holds Largest Naval Exercise in the Black Sea
