Ukrainian Troops Start Attacking, Russian Army Called Overwhelmed

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

United States of America claims to see army indications Ukraine start to be able to attack against the onslaught of soldiers Russia on the 27th day of Moscow’s invasion of the ex-Soviet country.

US Defense Department spokesman John Kirby said, for example, that Ukrainian forces are currently trying to retake the city of Kherson, which has been occupied by Russia since the invasion.

“They (Ukraine) have defended very smart, very agile, very creative, in the places they believed to be the right place to defend, and we have seen them now, in places especially in the south near Kherson, they have trying to reclaim his territory,” Kirby was quoted as saying CNN.

Ukrainian military forces also claim they have regained control of Makariv, an urban area some 48 kilometers west of the country’s capital, Kyiv.

The claim was disclosed by the Ukrainian armed forces in a recent Facebook post.

“Ukraine’s state flag was raised over the city of Makariv,” they wrote, Tuesday (22/3).

The movement of Russian troops towards Kyiv was also reportedly hampered. This stalled Russian military convoy was also used by Ukrainian troops and residents of the capital to prepare for resistance.

Ukrainian troops, assisted by some Kyiv residents who are still surviving, make fortifications made of piles of sandbags.

On the 27th day of the invasion, the Russian troops had not yet succeeded in occupying Kyiv despite their all-out air raids on the capital.

More than 3.5 million Kyiv residents, mostly women and children, have fled the capital since Russia invaded February 24.

Kyiv mayor and former world boxing champion, Vitali Klitschko, told civilians to seek cover if air defense sirens sounded.

“For people who have been under constant pressure since the start of the invasion, this is an opportunity to breathe a little,” said Alexis, guiding the team. AFP across the city of Kyiv.

“After all, they are traumatized, they don’t really want to come out.”

Those who survive in the capital are mostly military troops and citizens who are willing to help take up arms to defend the city.

Maxym Kostetskyi, a 29-year-old lawyer who volunteers for the fighter, said the curfew felt “like a break,” especially with the warmer spring weather.

“We don’t know if Russia will continue to try to besiege the city, but we are much more confident, morale is high,” he added.
