Panic among Bulgarians in Ukraine is growing. In Kiev, a woman of Bulgarian origin reported that the embassy had not yet taken any action to evacuate her family. Although the situation in southwestern Ukraine is calm for now, our compatriots there are also considering evacuation, reports BNT.

Maria Dimova lives in Kiev with her children and husband. She is of Bulgarian origin and has the status of a permanent resident of Bulgaria. The beginning of the Russian military operation in Ukraine boils her in Kiev, where Maria is currently hiding because she is afraid:

“My origin is – my father’s, my grandfather is Bulgarian. We lived in Bulgaria. I called and asked for evacuation, and they told me – no, they evacuate only citizens of Bulgaria. Here I have a friend who has residence, she is married to a Bulgarian, they also do not plan to evacuate her. The Bulgarian embassy refused us, “says Maria.

She is so scared that she is afraid to show her face. That is why he urgently wants to evacuate:

“Even now we are ready to evacuate. Just evacuate us. We have small children. I have a place … I can work, I have a place to live. I don’t understand at all why I can’t evacuate my relatives who have a background.” , she shares.

And while some are wondering how to leave Ukraine, others are returning there. Lawyer Georgi Georgiev is married to a Ukrainian woman, and currently their two children, aged 13 and 15, are in Ukraine and he is going there to pick them up:

“They are in Chernivtsi, thank God they are in western Ukraine, near the Romanian border. There are disruptions in connections, mobile connections are not so regular, the internet is down, but we have a conventional telephone in the apartment. When the invasion of Donetsk and Luhansk area, we knew from the first minute – my wife has relatives in Lugansk. We follow as much as we can. Our other friends from Dnepropetrovsk we told them that the war had started and while we were explaining to them a rocket exploded. They wanted to leave, but the president declared martial law and they are generally standing still, “Georgiev said.

The village of Kamchik, southwestern Ukraine, was calm during the day, but people of Bulgarian descent in the area are already preparing for evacuation.

“Terrible things are going on all over Ukraine – weapons, people are dying, that’s the worst thing. I’m worried about my child, my family, that’s what’s important to me. That’s why evacuation is an option for me, but so far things are calm here.” , says Ivan Stoyanov.

There is no fighting in Izmail either, but people are worried:

Svetlana Radolova says: “It is calm here in Bessarabia for now and I hope it will stay that way, it is just in the air. But I have friends, acquaintances, my son is a student in Bulgaria, so the road is to Bulgaria.”

The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that they are currently providing transport for evacuation, and those wishing to evacuate are registered in the embassy. When transport is provided, people with Bulgarian citizenship will be evacuated first, and then everyone else.
