Two-year-old Maroussia died in Moscow with signs of Kawasaki syndrome

Mom baby warned about the dangers of doctors and parents

“We only expected these children in June,” the rheumatologist told me in the hospital, where we went with Marusya on May 18, ”says Anna P.“ I want to talk about the course of our illness so that it can warn someone, now Moms write, they ask about how exactly the daughter was ill, what signs, what should be feared.

Perhaps what happened to us will be able to help and doctors will pay attention to dangerous symptoms earlier, and not the way we did when it was too late … “

There are already hundreds of such cases in the West. Doctors do not understand anything. Since everyone was initially calmed down, they say that young children tolerate coronavirus very easily. And suddenly, from about April, one and a half to two months after the mass epidemic, around the world began to register cases of a strange disease among children. The average age is from 0 to 5 years, but there are older.

At first, everyone was hospitalized with suspicion of Kawasaki syndrome – a rare disease with a high mortality rate that causes necrotizing damage to the arteries, one of the very first manifestations is a rash on the feet and arms that resembles an allergy. Ultrasound immediately shows changes in the heart muscle. Children of both sexes, boys and girls, are ill.

“The first sign of the new syndrome is a strange rash on the arms and legs.”

When there were a lot of such episodes, scientists suggested that this was not Kawasaki, but probably a very serious complication of COVID-19, which is now thought to sometimes occur in children even after an asymptomatic infection. It is believed that this is also a cytokine storm, as in older people, a hurricane-like reaction of the immune system, but, unlike the elderly, delayed in time. This is just a version, as if no one can say anything yet.

A child died in France, three in the United States. All subsequently found a positive test for coronavirus. Prior to this, according to the parents, the children were not ill with anything special.

In the US state of New York, 102 similar cases have been recorded in recent months, while in the country at the end of May they were counted 164 in 17 states.

“The first sign of the new syndrome is a strange rash on the arms and legs.”

The mother of two-year-old Muscovite Marousi P. told MK what led to the death of her daughter and what signs should be immediately noted: “If doctors have been warned in advance that this could also begin in Russia, if ZOOM conferences were specially held with specialists “from other countries that have already encountered this terrible syndrome, why didn’t they guard in the emergency room and recognize that it could be?”

According to Anna, Marusya was not ill with the coronavirus as such. However, three and a half weeks before the incident, the child’s temperature rose to 39-40 degrees for several days, then everything went away. “I was also shivering for three days, I woke up at night from what was just starting to shake … I wrote everything off because of my daughter’s illness. We did a smear shortly before that, I did a CT scan with my eldest son – it showed nothing. Marusya was also clean. ”

The child was admitted to the Moscow Children’s Hospital on the evening of May 18. At that time, the symptoms were as follows: 7 days fever 37.5-39.5. The last day the temperature went astray, diarrhea, swollen reddened eyes, bright lips, and most importantly – a suspicious rash on the palms and feet.

This is how Anna describes what follows.

“In the emergency room, the doctor examined me, to my direct question, does this look like Kawasaki syndrome or not, they told me: no, it’s an allergy. You have high white blood cells.

The day before that they donated blood. There were no white blood cells. They took a smear on COVID-19. Put in the infectious ward. The doctor on duty came … She did not rule out the “kawasaki”, immediately prescribed aspirin, went to see the platelet count. Unfortunately, the shift came to an end early in the morning, and she went home …

They dismissed me. What would you like? The child has a temperature, she has an enterovirus rash, we are giving you antibiotics, calm down already. Did an ultrasound of the heart. The ultrasound was good. We, full of hope, have gone back. ”

Anna says that they waited a long time for rheumatologists, but there were none. Nobody called them right away. Although these are precisely the specialists who treat Kawasaki disease.

“The rash has spread all over the body.

Again I ran to look for a doctor. By that time, the head of the infectious diseases department was already talking to me. When asked why the child breathes so, the answer was: put it higher on the pillow. But she had a wild shortness of breath already!

“Anna spent several scary days with her daughter in a hospital in the” clean zone “.”

When asked about a bloody nose, the pediatrician said to spray with a flushing agent. At this point, the child’s blood vessels burst and blood flowed into the stomach. Kawasaki or not, I asked a hundred times a day. The answer was: Kawasaki girls do not get sick (alas, this is not so – MK)

Finally they called rheumatologists. I will not tire of thanking these people. The doctor, looking at the baby, immediately suspected Kawasaki, and in the end, we were prescribed immunoglobulin by night. A low bow to the nurse who did not sleep all night and changed the charge of the medicine every hour.

The doctor said to track any changes on the body. It became easier at night. But, alas, the change of nurse came to an end, at 7 in the morning she left. Then it started it is not clear what.

The child stopped receiving immunoglobulin at 6 in the morning, and the nurse said that they would continue at 9 in the morning. She didn’t do anything at 9am, 10am, 11am or 12am! Nothing at all! Moreover, she was getting worse and worse, and I ran along the corridor, looking for at least one health worker.

They told me that I was not alone here, and before we put the dropper, all the other children needed to take blood, in the end we were the last.

My child was suffocating … Finally, they decided to transfer us to rheumatology. They did an ultrasound, there were functional small changes … It was decided to put in an intensive care unit overnight. From there she did not return.

The resuscitation doctor who took her is a brilliant doctor, who is also a man with a capital letter. Which was always there, explaining, supporting and treating. I thought everything would be fine, but his change was over … “

Edema reached incredible sizes, nurses infinitely infused more and more droppers. Marusia was taken to prepare for hemodialysis. “They took away a heavy child who could at least say something and even began to hold the bottle, but returned an almost lifeless body after 40 minutes …”

Further intubation, sedation, a day in this state and death …. Anna was not allowed to visit her dying daughter – her mother did not have a smear on coronavirus.

Shortly before the end, she drove home – to sleep and eat for the first time in a few days, they promised that they would let her back without problems, but.

“She left without me … The whole story has many questions. I hope the doctors have done their best. But! Give clear instructions for the emergency room, why, without a medical education, I talked about the syndrome, and the doctor called it allergy? I was begging for help … I was clearly pointing out incomprehensible wild symptoms. ”

As Anna was later told, antibodies against IgM coronavirus were found in Marusya’s blood – apparently, in the acute phase of the disease. It is suspected that it was COVID-19 that could launch the same post-viral syndrome resembling Kawasaki.

“We took the medical history from the hospital, and there, however, there is information about antibodies to COVID-19. The main question and my pain. Why, if Western colleagues warned of the possible appearance of such children, if such was known, did nothing? Perhaps this information will help someone, save, but not my Marusya … “

On her social network page, Anna wrote what she should pay close attention to:

“I want to tell you exactly about the symptoms that Marusya had.

The doctor said that this disease goes away differently. But there is a certain set with which, obviously, you need to sound the alarm.

Rash. Any rash may raise a question. We started with feet and hands. Then it spread much stronger and brighter.

Red swollen eyes. Bright lips, bright tongue. Inflamed lymph nodes. Marousi was around his neck.

Diarrhea is possible. Well, the temperature. Temperature is more than 4-5 days. She fried and fried, this temperature.

Then symptoms such as endlessly inflamed gums, nasal mucosa, etc. are added. In a word, if the temperature lasts more than 4-5 days, do not wait further, ask for tests, examine the child through a magnifying glass. In analyzes, you need to look at platelets. They are increasing, although it’s already better to show all the tests to doctors. ”

P.S. According to MK, in Moscow at the moment there are several children in hospitals with similar symptoms. However, there is no official confirmation of this yet.
