(dpa) Two women were killed in Carinthia, Austria; one man shot himself in a town in Italy, 30 kilometers away. The investigators assume that the 63-year-old man killed his wife and then a girlfriend on Saturday before he committed suicide at a police checkpoint, a Carinthian police spokesman told the news agency dpa on Sunday.
According to the police, the series of violence began in the suspect’s house in Wernberg. On Saturday morning, his 62-year-old wife was killed by a blow to the head with a sharp object. The police have so far not confirmed reports that the man has been repeatedly banned from entering.
Shortly after this act, a 56-year-old woman died nearby in the street from a head shot that was fired from close range. The police speak of an “acquaintance relationship” between the suspect and his second alleged victim. The man escaped in a car and drove directly to Italy.
In the midday hours came the news of the third violent death that Saturday, this time from Tarvisio, a border town in Italy about 30 kilometers away. The man was stopped in front of a restaurant by Italian police, opened fire and then killed himself, reported the Italian broadcaster RAI. The officials therefore did not shoot back.
Austrian criminalists are now investigating and questioning the crime scene. However, it is already clear that the suspect did not legally own the pistol.
