Opinion Iñaki Gabilondo: Politics under review | Today for Today | The signature of Iñaki Gabilondo

Politics is at stake and I don’t know if you are very aware of it. Scared, worried and with enough time to think, citizens are in confinement a much more demanding political clientele and much less distracted than usual. The issues on the table are literally life and death, survival or subsistence, recovery or ruin, and therefore citizens have all alerts activated and all personal and collective sensors on. Our politicians know this, of course.

But I get the impression that some are misinterpreting that circumstance. They believe that this hypersensitivity makes citizens more receptive to their demagogues and that, charging their luck, they tighten the ranks of their followers. Gross mistake. Yes they tighten the rows of their hooligans, of the fervent radicals of perpetual vows that each formation has, which are many, but which are a minority.

For the vast majority, faced with a drama of this caliber, the partiality dissolves like a sugar. It is necessary to have lost consciousness of the reality to believe that the society is living this problem dressed with the t-shirt of the political party to which it votes or with which it sympathizes. If it lived up to that exceptional suffering, today’s session in Parliament would be in keeping with the moment, that is, extraordinary. All the discrepancies that might be necessary could be manifested in it, of course, but from it should come a joint message, of hope of confidence in the future, of the will to work together. The war bills, when the war is over.

If, as I fear, this is not the case, our policy may be one more victim of the coronavirus and all of us are condemned to live it in the worst of trade-offs: either with polarization exacerbated to the maximum or turning our backs en masse.
