Part of the immigration to the United States has been temporarily suspended due to the corona virus. US President Donald Trump announced during his daily press conference on the night of Wednesday to Thursday (Dutch time) that he had signed a presidential decree for this.
“To protect our wonderful American workers, I have just signed a decree temporarily suspending immigration to the US This will ensure that US unemployed people of all backgrounds are at the forefront of jobs as soon as our economy revolves,” Trump said during the press conference. Also, because of the decree, more health care would remain available to US COVID-19 patients.
The rule applies for at least sixty days. The measure may be extended or adjusted thereafter. According to an official from the United States Department of Homeland Security, the decree applies to people who want to apply for permanent residence and not to immigrants who already have such residence.

Previous attempts at full immigration freeze blocked
It is not yet predictable whether the decree will actually lead to an immigration stop. In 2017, Trump banned an entry ban for immigrants from mainly Islamic countries by decree. Federal judges blocked this decree, but eventually the ban came in an adapted form.
However, the corona crisis appears to give the US President more room to introduce an entry ban. Trump previously imposed restrictions on travelers from specific areas. Since January, travelers from China have been refused entry. In March, the US decided to also ban flights from the European Union and the United Kingdom.
Some critics believe that Trump is misusing the corona crisis to pursue his policies.
