President of China Xi Jinping believes Taiwan belongs to China, so war between the two countries seems likely, says US security policy expert Dmitri Alperovitch.

Alperovitch gave an interview to the Washington Post (WP) about his new book on US-China relations World on the brink with. Part of the interview is also shared in X.

Alperovitch, who was born in Russia but moved to the United States as a child, says that conquering Taiwan has become a personal ambition for China’s Xi.

– China has wanted to take over Taiwan since 1949. Although Taiwan never really belonged to China, Xi Jinping believes it does, Alperovtich notes.

China considers Taiwan to be its own, and according to Beijing, it has the right to take over the island, even by using military force. Taiwan considers itself an independent state with the right to defend itself.

Final victory

According to Alperovitch, the seizure of Taiwan would be Xi’s final victory in the civil war, which mainland China believes has never finally ended.

According to the expert, relations between the United States and China have no bearing on China’s desire to subjugate Taiwan, but it is a matter of conquest stemming from China’s history. Alperovitch believes that Chinese military forces will be ready to attack Taiwan in as little as three years.

Taiwan is an important country for the West and especially for the United States, because it is the world’s leading country in the manufacture of microchips.

Alperovitch says that the United States should strive to ensure that China can no longer produce technologically advanced microchips on its own, but instead should buy them from America.
