Trump Calls For Joe Biden To Resign After Taliban Occupy Afghanistan

Former US President Donald Trump has called for President Joe Biden to step down from office. The exclamation came after Taliban managed to take over Afghanistan when US troops withdrew after 20 years.

“It’s time for Joe Biden to step down in disgrace for what he allowed to happen in Afghanistan,” Trump said in a statement.

The Taliban have retaken Afghanistan 20 years after they were toppled by the US invasion. The Taliban took control of Kabul on Sunday local time after 10 days of attacks.

Taliban took control of Afghanistan two weeks before August 31, the deadline set by Biden to complete the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan.

Under Trump, in 2020 the US brokered a deal with the Taliban in Doha. Under the deal, the US will withdraw all of its troops by May 2021, in exchange for various security guarantees from the militants.

When Biden took power earlier this year, he pushed back the withdrawal deadline and set no terms.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Biden’s decision. Trump said it would be a “much different and much more successful withdrawal” if he were still president.

“What Joe Biden has done with Afghanistan is legendary. It will be one of the greatest defeats in American history!” he said in another statement.

The Biden administration was quick to point out that Trump was negotiating the Doha deal on withdrawal. He also pointed out that the majority of the US public supports ending “war forever.” Biden has faced heated criticism at home that the withdrawal was mismanaged.

Three senior Taliban sources previously told AFP the insurgents had taken control of the presidential palace.

“Taliban has entered the presidential palace,” said a senior Taliban commander.

“The mujahideen have entered the presidential palace and have taken control of it,” said a second commander. He added that a meeting on security in the capital was taking place there.
