Trends in Covid-19 Cases in Children Up 1,000 Percent, These are the Characteristics of Children’s Covid Symptoms

This was conveyed by the Chairperson of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) Piprim Basarah Yanuarso at the press conference of the Launching of the Covid-19 Management Guidelines Book Edition 4, Wednesday (9/2/2022).

“So from January (to February) it rose 10 times or more than 1.00 percent. From last week it rose 300 percent,” said Piprim.

For the record, IDAI recorded the data Covid-19 cases in children-children as of February 7, 2022, an increase of 1,000 percent or 10 times than the cases in January 2022.

Coronavirus case There were 676 cases of children recorded on January 24, 2022. Positive confirmed cases of Covid-19 in these children continued to experience a fairly sharp upward trend.

Data as of January 31, 2022, positive confirmation of Covid-19 in children in Indonesia to 2,775 cases and a significant increase again until February 7, 2022 which has reached 7,190 coronavirus case on the child.

“Meaning how many times did it increase? 300 percent, yes, the report (Covid-19 cases in children in Indonesia) from friends (IDAI) in the branch, the increase is 300 percent from the previous (January 31, 2022),” he said.

“Compared to January’s 676 cases, to 7,990 cases (February 7), it means (Covid-19 cases in children in Indonesia) have reached 1,000 percent more or 10 times more,” he added.

Prevalence number of cases Covid-19 infection in children which continues to increase is considered quite worrying.

So far, health experts have suspected that the Omicron variant and the Delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19 dominate cases in Indonesia, including children.

This is because these two variants have the ability to transmit and replicate or multiply rapidly, and cause symptoms from mild to critical degrees.

Symptoms of Covid-19 infection in children

Piprim explained, Covid symptoms in children not much different from infections in adults and the elderly.

With the current dominance of the Omicron variant infection, it is necessary to be aware of symptomatic Covid-19 cases in children, even from children Covid-19 symptoms which is considered light.

“So, most of them (children infected with Covid) have symptoms from the respiratory tract, cough, runny nose, sore throat. Yes, it’s almost the same as the common cold,” said Piprim.

“If you see a child coughing, having a runny nose, getting hot (body heat), be wary of contracting this (Omicron) variant,” he added.

Not only mild symptoms, there are also some children infected with Covid-19 without symptoms.

Meanwhile, there are other children infected with Covid-19 who have comorbidities and have never been vaccinated will have moderate to severe symptoms.

Although, there are some typical symptoms as conveyed by Piprim, there are also other symptoms that need to be watched out for as a sign of Covid-19 infection.

1. Moderate symptoms

Moderate symptoms in children are patients with clinical signs of non-severe pneumonia, such as coughing or difficulty breathing plus rapid breathing and/or chest indrawing, and no signs of severe pneumonia.

Rapid breathing criteria:

  • Age under 2 months, more than 60 times per minute
  • Age 2-11 months, more than 50 times per minute
  • Age 1-5 years, more than 40 times per minute
  • Age above 5 years, more than 30 times per minute

2. Severe symptoms

Symptoms of a severe degree in a pediatric patient, characterized by clinical pneumonia, cough or difficulty breathing, plus at least one of the following.

  • Central cyanosis or SpO2 < 93 percent
  • Heavy respiratory distress, such as rapid breathing, grunting, very heavy chest wall pulling.
  • General danger signs: inability to suckle or drink, lethargy or loss of consciousness, or choking.
  • Rapid breathing or chest indrawing (tachypnea) as described above.

3. Critical

Patients with critical symptoms are patients infected with Covid-19 with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), sepsis and septic shock, or other conditions that require life support equipment such as mechanical ventilation or vasopressor therapy.

With various possible symptoms due to Covid-19 infection in children, IDAI urges children who do not have obstacles or problems with the requirements for receiving Covid-19 to be given the vaccine immediately.

“Vaccines are important, yes, for children too. (Infected but) There are no symptoms, but later he can transmit everywhere (Covid-19),” he said.

Piprim also reminded that parents should not have any doubts about the current Covid-19 vaccine because the emergency use permit was issued according to procedures or safety standards for children.

However, if children do have severe comorbidities or comorbidities, please communicate and consult with a specialist doctor.

In addition to giving the Covid-19 vaccination, try to ensure that children also fulfill the mandatory vaccinations or immunizations that they should receive on a regular basis.

Adults or parents who live at home with children must also implement health protocols and teach children to adhere to health procedures wherever and whenever to avoid this Covid-19 infection.
