Tragedy Strikes The Bronx: Man Shot by Police After Attempting to Kill Mother on Christmas Day

Although the New York Police prevented the tragedy from becoming greater, a family from The Bronx was left with no reason to celebrate Christmas. A 30-year-old man was shot by officers inside an apartment after he tried to kill his mother with a knife.

Officer John Chell, NYPD patrol chief, gave an appearance and reported that the incident occurred Saturday morning, at a building on Creston Avenue, in the Bedford Park neighborhood.

After a call to 911, several agents arrived at the 13th floor of the building and saw a 19-year-old girl running with a stab wound to her face.

When they entered the apartment, they found the man holding his mother and holding a knife to her throat. The 45-year-old woman was already injured and bleeding, police detailed.

In the midst of the “hectic situation,” as Officer John Chell described to the media, one of the officers shot him in the head.

The subject was taken to a hospital in The Bronx, where he was pronounced dead.

The affected family had a history of domestic violence

In addition to hurting his mother and sister, the attacker had threatened to hurt himself, a detail that coincides with the family’s history of domestic violence, according to the Police.

Officer John Chell noted that the man was “emotionally disturbed,” although at the time of the arraignment they had no mental health reports.

“Today was a complete tragedy during this Christmas season. Thank God, our police officers arrived quickly and saved this family from further harm,” he said.

He also clarified that the entire incident was recorded on the body cameras of the officers who entered the apartment. He did not offer the reasons that triggered the violent episode.
