Remnants of drugs against COVID found in rivers of Ukraine

The Ministry of Ecology announced a large number of drugs for coronavirus in water samples from Ukrainian rivers.

The remains of medicines used in the treatment of COVID-19 have been identified in the main rivers of Ukraine. About it stated Deputy Head of the Ministry of Ecology Mikhail Khorev on the air of the Dom TV channel on Sunday, August 1.

According to the Deputy Minister, Ukraine recently conducted a primary analysis (screening) of the three main rivers, the waters of which are used for water supply to the population – the Dnieper, Dniester and Seversky Donets.

“They tested water for 3200 substances – this is a targeted screening, that is, when you have a specific list and you are looking for. And also water was tested for 64 thousand substances – this is just an assumption that they may be or not. According to the results, indeed, what- then there are pollutants, “Khorev explained.

It was found that in the Ukrainian waters there is a very large amount of zinc, as well as pesticides, but not in very large quantities. Metals are also fixed, while there is practically no mercury in the water. There are also traces of pharmaceuticals in the water.

There are a lot of “covid” drugs. What is included in the “covid” protocol, these substances are now in our water. We record this. We are taking pills with you. A large number of people are being treated, and it all goes there. The same thing is happening in Europe … Europeans clearly assess: if pharmaceuticals come across in water, it means that the treatment facilities are not working well enough … In Europe there are good modernized treatment facilities, but there are also old ones, ”added Khorev …

At the same time, as the official noted, a very big problem is the presence of phosphates, which are used in the production of detergents.

“Firstly, they are poorly cleaned, and therefore are constantly in our wastewater due to the fact that treatment facilities cannot cope with them. There are two ways in the world how to deal with phosphates: either build expensive treatment facilities, or they are prohibited from using detergents, “says the deputy head of the Ministry of Ecology.

In turn, Ukraine went the other way – introduced restrictions on the use of phosphate-containing products, but they will begin to operate in 2023.

We would like to remind that earlier the modernization of treatment facilities in Ukraine estimated at 300 billion euros… The modernization of wastewater treatment plants is an expensive process, therefore in Ukraine they plan to limit the use of products, which are the main pollutants.

It was also reported that the Green Country project will cost UAH 2 billion… Funds for planting trees will be attracted from forestry activities and from the state budget.
