Top Innovations Revealed at CES 2024: Transparent TVs, AI Technology, and Health Monitoring Devices

The world’s largest consumer electronics fair – CES 2024 – took place again in Las Vegas, USA, from Tuesday to Friday. At least 130,000 visitors did not miss the annual event, which has been held since 1967. And there was something to look at. Over 4,000 exhibitors, including 1,200 startups from more than 150 countries and regions, came to show the news. And the editors of SZ Tech bring you a selection of the best of them.

The event often abounds with attractive demonstrations of robots, not just kitchen ones, or advanced technologies in the field of healthcare and medicine. It is precisely these areas of machines and equipment that artificial intelligence has quite expectedly shifted.

Television as an aquarium

The originally South Korean, now multinational brand LG unveiled what it calls “the world’s first wireless transparent OLED TV” at CES. The display with a diagonal of 77 inches, i.e. less than two meters, can be switched to transparent mode, in which it almost blends in with the surroundings. And when it’s on, it seems to levitate through the air. But it can also be switched to the usual black, which we are used to.

“The unique thing about OLED is that it’s an organic material that we can print on any type of surface. And that’s what we did, we printed it on a clear piece of glass. So to get OLED picture quality, we have a contrast film that we put above and below this material,” explains David Park from LG’s home entertainment division in the video.

And the content displayed on the so-called OLED T is then wirelessly transmitted by the Zero Connect Box, also from this brand, which sends sound and footage in 4K resolution. Works of art can also be projected on the TV and have it as a picture or canvas at home. It will be available in stores this year, LG has yet to announce the price.

Smart TV with AI – not even a soccer ball gets blurred

We’ll stick with televisions. Another well-known South Korean brand, Samsung, could not be far behind. Not only did it rush in with its own transparent concept, in this case using micro LED technology, but it also unveiled its latest model, the Neo QLED 8K, powered by a new AI chip. According to her, the display has the best picture the company has ever produced. Crystal clear even when moving fast. AI will thus track the ball during a football match, focus on it and prevent its blurring. But not only that.

“Today we’re unveiling this groundbreaking AI screen that will change everything you know about smart TVs. Samsung’s AI screen is powered by an artificial intelligence device that works directly inside, which means fast data processing, a high level of privacy protection, and even reduced power consumption. We will be the center of your AI home, connecting all your devices to offer you a more flexible and diverse lifestyle,” the company’s president SW Yong shows in the next video of this article.

A 98-inch TV will be available to order from September for $40,000. Converted to roughly CZK 900,000.

Voice controllable AI in your pocket

The R1 artificial intelligence helper from Rabbit, which works on the LAM system, i.e. Large Action Model, aroused interest. “LAM can learn on any interface from any software, regardless of what platform it runs on. In short – the Large Language Model (LLM) understands what you say, but the Large Action Model can then arrange things. We’re using LAM to take AI from words to action,” says Jesse Lyu, director of startup Rabbit, in an online presentation, an excerpt of which is also included in this article.

A young American company produced this tiny mobile assistant in the first batch of about 10,000 units with a price of only $200. And it’s already sold out. Unlike regular smartphones and computers, it does not use any advanced communication model such as ChatGPT or operating software. The latter has its own, and its manufacturer mainly wanted to ensure that users could do without a number of different applications.

The user communicates with the device by voice, and it simply performs the assigned tasks through the available tools – from shopping and paying, to starting music and other devices, to recognizing things using a small rotating camera that can be aimed with a wheel. It has a button to activate commands, a small display of 2.8 inches and storage up to 128 gigabytes.

Artificial intelligence takes care of health

“This device is intended for families to monitor the health of their loved ones – children, parents, grandparents. There can be up to eight users per device. It is also designed for people with chronic diseases. For example, for someone with a chronic respiratory disease who wants to be proactive about their health and simply monitor their own data day by day and be able to alert the doctor if there is any change,” says Livia Robic from the company in the next video in this article Withings to their product.

Startups at CES managed to attract attention with a combination of medicine and artificial intelligence. Moreover, also at an affordable price. As a multifunctional device BeamO from the French company Withings, which can measure body functions using a number of sensors and tools, and artificial intelligence analyzes them further. A small box costs 250 dollars (CZK 5,600).

“The four sensors are used for an electrocardiogram, which shows you your heart activity and can detect signs of heart fibrillation, a type of heart defect. A pulse oximeter is also built into one electrode, which can measure the oxygenation values of your blood. And then there’s a digital stethoscope that you can place on your body and listen to the sound of your heart or lungs, either through headphones or you can even stream it live to your doctor over a video call. And finally – a non-contact thermometer that shows your temperature in a few seconds by scanning your forehead and arteries,” adds the representative of the French startup in the video above.

At CES 2024, however, the Anura MagicMirror smart mirror from the Canadian startup NuraLogix was also presented, which should be able to analyze the blood flow under the skin, its pressure, pulse, as well as signs of stress and aging in the face after only 30 seconds of looking into it. At the same time, according to the company, with the help of AI, it can recognize and notify the user of the risks of the development of diabetes and other diseases.

“We use AI to help us make predictions and estimates of various health parameters – like measuring your blood pressure or your risk of heart disease. Artificial intelligence is the piece that helps us make these estimates and predictions,” says Lindsay Brennan, who developed it at Nuralogix, in a video with the smart mirror.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, however, a smart ring for monitoring bodily functions was presented specifically for women. Or the Glasses headset from the Romanian startup Lumen, which with AI could one day help the blind instead of blind dogs. Both devices can be seen in the video with the smart mirror.

Next week, the editorial staff of SZ Tech will also focus on what the new CES 2024 showed in the field of mobility – both in the case of electric cars and, for example, drones.
