Till Lindemann: Early Life, Family, and Musical Beginnings

Till Lindemann was born in Leipzig on January 4, 1963, but grew up in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. He and his sister first lived with their mother, the journalist Brigitte Lindemann, and later for a while with their father, the children’s book author Werner Lindemann.

In his youth, Lindemann started swimming, but stopped doing so in 1979. Not entirely voluntarily, as it is said: During a competition, Lindemann came too close to a team from Germany from the perspective of the Stasi.

Lindemann has (at least) three children

The journalist Michele Bettendorf writes in her 2002 book “Ursprung Punkszene” that Lindemann married early and became a father at the age of 22. He is said to have raised his daughter Nele (born 1985) alone for seven years.

In 1993 Lindemann became the father of another daughter: Marie-Louise. In an interview with Playboy, Till Lindemann said in 2017 that he still had a son. His likely current marriage status: divorced.

Till Lindemann is also a grandfather: daughter Nele gave birth to son Fritz in 2008. Lindemann is also the godfather of the eldest son of musician Joey Kelly. In his free time, Till Lindemann likes to go fishing and hunting, as he has explained in several interviews.

I have no female friendships. I think that’s possible if you’ve popped them beforehand. Then maybe.

By the way… Khira Li Lindemann is not the daughter of Till Lindemann, but of bandmate Richard Kruspe. The 32-year-old bears the surname of her mother, Till Lindemann’s ex-wife.

The first Rammstein concert was a flop

Lindemann worked as a carpenter and basket maker until the fall of the Wall, and played in the punk band “First ass“. There he sat on the drums, occasionally sang, occasionally played the bass.

At the end of the 80s he met the later Rammstein musicians. Today’s mega success of Rammstein was not foreseeable at the beginning: only about 15 people came to the first Rammstein concert in April 1994 in Leipzig.
