On Tuesday, the Hamburg regional court sentenced three men to life imprisonment for murder. A year ago, the three friends from Steilshoop secretly slipped methadone into an acquaintance’s drink. The 39-year-old then died of an overdose.
The trial revealed abysses, said the presiding judge. Not only with the three defendants who committed a treacherous robbery-murder, but also with many witnesses, friends and acquaintances of the three from Steilshoop. They would have brazenly lied in court because of a misunderstood code of honor – according to the motto: In Steilshoop people stick together.
Methadone mixed into the drink
The court considered it proven that the three defendants, aged 41, 38 and 26, initially drank alcohol and consumed cocaine together with the 39-year-old on the evening of April 13, 2023 in the apartment of one of the defendants. Without his knowledge, they are said to have mixed methadone into his drink. He died of an overdose. Methadone is a man-made opioid that is used to replace heroin or to treat severe pain.
Police received an anonymous tip
When the victim was lying dead on the sofa, the defendants took all of his valuables, ordered goods in his name on the Internet and tried to use tricks to get the money in his account. They covered the body with a blanket and left it in the apartment. The dead man was only found days later, after an anonymous tip to the police.
