This is Toyota’s hydrogen technology that drives the Energy Observer

Toyota it has become a great power in the development of the hydrogen fuel cell, a solution that will make electric cars forget about plugs and charges and that you have in the Toyota Mirai to one of its main representatives. But Toyota is not only applying its technology in its own cars, but also in the Energy Observer, the world’s first vessel that runs on hydrogen and of which the Japanese manufacturer is in fact official partner.

This futuristic catamaran wears since 2017 sailing medium world using a combination of renewable energy and a system that produces hydrogen from seawater without emitting any carbon. Now Toyota has developed a new fuel cell system created specifically for the Energy Observer, but that has various components released for the first time in the Toyota Mirai, your cars with hydrogen fuel cell. A new system that will allow improve power, efficiency and reliability of the ship in order to deal with greater guarantees on objective of crossing the Atlantic and Pacific oceans this year.

A versatile and modular technology

In just seven months, the European Toyota R&D team managed to design and produce the different components for later manufacture and install the compact hydrogen fuel cell module in the Energy Observer. This rapid adaptation is due to modular design of this system, what has allowed to implement this technology not only in cars or boats like this, but also in trucks Y buses.

At the end of last year this new system could already be tested with the ship in the shipyard and tests are already being carried out at full power at sea. It will be the final test before the Energy Observer starts its new and ambitious journey in the middle of this month of February.

20,000 miles behind

“We are very proud to have the Toyota fuel cell system on our ocean voyages and for be able to test it in the most adverse conditions recognizes the founder and captain of the Energy Observer Victorien Erussard. “After three years and about 20,000 nautical miles of shooting, the energy supply and the storage system of the Energy Observer offer great reliability and we already have our sights set on the next step of the project: to have a reliable and affordable system for our maritime community.

For Dr. Johan van Zyl, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe “It is a pleasure to continue demonstrating the versatility of Toyota’s fuel cell system. Our European R&D team has collaborated intensively with the Energy Observer team to develop and install this module in an existing vessel. This project demonstrates that Toyota’s fuel cell technology can be used in any context “
