“Think Utrecht: Innovations in Oncology and the Care of Tomorrow Conference”

The Utrecht region has enormous innovative power in the field of oncology. What do our innovations look like? How do we ensure that they are available to patients as quickly as possible? And how do we translate them into the ‘care of tomorrow’? We will demonstrate this during the Think Utrecht oncology conference!

More and more people are diagnosed with cancer and live with the consequences. Fortunately, innovations in oncology have greatly increased the chances of survival and quality of life of cancer patients. During Think Utrecht! we take a detailed look at those innovations and how we use them to boost tomorrow’s healthcare. The conference will be opened by Hans Oosters, Commissioner of the King in the province of Utrecht.

The Utrecht region is innovative

Internationally, the Utrecht region is regarded as a leader due to its research and innovations in the field of oncology. Consider, for example, our research with organoids (‘mini-organs’), immunotherapy and recovery after cancer. The MR-linac is another Utrecht invention that is now used worldwide. With this device, tumors can be irradiated more precisely and in fewer sessions by continuously monitoring them during the procedure. This treatment has made radiotherapy much less stressful for patients, and they also have to undergo major surgery less often.

Meet top scientists

To ‘translate’ research results into innovations, academic and private parties work together continuously. All our innovations are thanks to doctors, scientists, patients, policy makers and companies who have joined forces. For example, the MR-linac was developed at UMC Utrecht together with Philips and Elekta. During Think Utrecht! we would like to introduce visitors to some of our top scientists and their innovations.

Sharing is caring

In the context of it Integral Care Agreement is of course important: how do we make all our innovations suitable for the ‘care of tomorrow’, which must also be sustainable, affordable and ‘staffable’? In the Utrecht region we do this from Oncomid (Oncology Central Netherlands), the close partnership between hospitals in Central Netherlands, supported by the Citrine Fund and IKNL.

Our knowledge, expertise and innovations in the field of care and research are thus not limited to one hospital, but are shared on an ongoing, multidisciplinary and equal basis. Oncomid is the foundation of our innovations. The patient is central to this, and he/she always receives the right care in the right place. This fits in seamlessly with the Integrated Care Agreement (IZA).

Join the discussion

During our congress we will take a closer look at the ‘care of tomorrow’ and how we are already shaping it regionally successfully. prof. Dr. Hans Nijman (appointed by Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport Ernst Kuipers as quartermaster ‘network and expert care for cancer’) will kick off a substantive panel discussion: how do we provide appropriate care in the context of IZA?
