Former Colleague of Fugitive Jho Low in 1MDB Scandal Dies After Questioning: Reports

Kuala Lumpur

Kee Kok Thiam, a former colleague of the fugitive mega corruption scandal 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) Jho Low, reportedly died. The 56-year-old man died a few weeks after being questioned by the anti-corruption authorities Malaysia regarding the whereabouts of Jho Low, who is now a fugitive.

As reported Reuters, Wednesday (31/5/2023), a statement released by the lawyer’s office Valen, Oh & Partners said Kee died at a hospital in Malaysia after suffering a ‘sudden severe stroke’ on Monday (29/5) local time. No further details regarding Kee’s death were explained.

“We urge all parties to refrain from speculating about this unfortunate event and to allow the family space to mourn his death,” said a statement from the office of the attorney representing Kee in the 1MDB case.

Report Channel News Asia said the cremation ceremony for Kee’s body was held at the Kepong Crematorium, Kuala Lumpur and ended on Wednesday (30/5) at 09.30 am local time.

Kee is a colleague of Jho Low, whose full name is Low Taek Jo, a Malaysian financier who is wanted by at least three countries. Malaysian and United States (US) authorities have named Jho Low as the main mastermind and played a central role in the US$4.5 billion 1MDB corruption scandal.

Early this May, Kee returned to Malaysia from Macau after five years on the run. He was arrested upon arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, then questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) about the whereabouts of Jho Low and his house was searched.

Kee himself is one of the suspects in the 1MDB case, in which he allegedly participated in receiving diverted funds from a state investment company formed by the former Prime Minister (PM) Najib Razak That.
