The environment ministers of the federal provinces unanimously supported the measure, but the federal government continues to oppose it, largely because of the position of free liberals.
The possible introduction of a speed limit would be a cultural breakthrough for the country, as currently 60% of highways have no speed limit, but only a recommendation to drive at 130 km / h. However, the 16 environment ministers failed to agree on a specific border, although most believe a limit of 120 or 130 km / h is realistic.
According to the Federal Environment Agency, a speed limit of 120 km / h will save 2.6 million tonnes of CO2 per year, while a speed limit of 130 km / h will save 1.9 million tonnes of CO2. But if the speed limit is 100 km / h, it will save 5.5 million tons of CO2 per year.
The debate on the introduction of speed limits on motorways has been on the Greens’ agenda for years, and after the rapid rise in energy prices, it has been taken more seriously again and is now supported by other parties. In addition, according to a study by the German Institute (IW), 77% of Germans drive at less than 130 km / h, even in areas where there is no speed limit. The final decision will be taken by the Bundestag.
