They went for a walk to Covide, got lost in the rain and almost went into hypothermia

A group of inhabitants of the parish of Aboim da Nóbrega, in the municipality of Vila Verde, this afternoon recreated an event from the 13th century, when the noble Dom João de Aboim lived in the former Terras da Nóbrega, currently located between Vila Verde and Ponte da Barca.

The group intends to warn of the cultural nature of the parish that had in Dom João de Aboim one of the most important figures over the centuries, having been the Chief Butler of the Kingdom of Portugal between 1264 and 1279.

The knights lent their bodies to recreate Dom João de Aboim and 12 nobles on horseback, at a time when there were no armies and when the nobles called on the people’s pawns to help in the battles.

The tour, designed and organized by Domingos Costa and Luís Cação, passed by the house where the nobleman lived, Casa da Pequenina, with the intention of going to Castelo da Nóbrega (or Castelo de Aboim, for those on the side of Vila Verde), but that came out badly because of the rain.

The initial idea went through a kind of ‘reconquest’ of that castle towards the side of Vila Verde, since it is officially registered as being of Ponte da Barca. However, the organizers decided to just remember the cultural nature of the presence of D. João de Aboim in that territory.

Castelo da Nóbrega (or Aboim)

The ruins of Castelo da Nóbrega have been the subject of dispute among inhabitants of Sampriz, in Ponte da Barca, and Aboim da Nóbrega, in Vila Verde. Officially, the castle is registered as belonging to the municipality of Ponte da Barca, although military letters indicate that it is divided in half between the two municipalities.

For the inhabitants of Aboim da Nóbrega, the ruins are called Castelo de Aboim, something that Barquenses do not like, with several disputes on social networks because of this reason.

The Ponte da Barca Chamber has been promoting some activities in that place, at about 800 meters high, as was the case of the Trail da Nóbrega, carried out in previous years. There is also a viewpoint and it is customary to place Christmas ornaments like a giant star in December.

On the Vila Verde side, the municipality has not carried out activities on the spot, but organizers of walks, born in Aboim da Nóbrega, always take the trails to that point, calling it Castelo de Aboim.

The place, on the side of Vila Verde, is called Castelo de Aboim, according to the records of the Parish Council. On the other side of the hill, it is Ventuzelo, in the parish of Sampriz, in the municipality of Ponte da Barca.

João Peres de Aboim was born in Aboim da Nóbrega in 1213, the son of Pero Ourigues da Nóbrega, seneschal of D. Sancho II.

He was one of the most important figures in royal politics at the time of D. Afonso III. He was the queen’s butler between 1254 and 1259, becoming chief butler almost until her death.

He was also a lieutenant in Ponte de Lima, in 1259, and a lieutenant in Évora or Alentejo between 1270 and 1284, where he spent the last days of his life.
