Two days before India celebrates its 72nd Republic Day, the world today celebrates International Education Day. Celebrated on January 24 of each year, International Education Day marks and celebrates the importance of education for peace and world development. The day not only provides the world with the opportunity to take into account the progress made in the field of education and development, but also to take stock of the challenges that make education inaccessible to a large population of countries in developing and underdeveloped, reported the Indian Express. .

International Education Day takes on more importance this year, as the entire academic session of students was eliminated due to the coronavirus pandemic taking over the world. While the rich were able to make up for their studies with the help of online classes, the poor in large numbers were unable to escape the digital divide. This year’s International Education Day theme has been rightly chosen as ‘Recover and Revitalize Education for the Covid-19 Generation’. The international body UNESCO has said that the time has come to increase international collaboration and solidarity to bring the issue of education to the recovery center.

The celebration of International Education Day will take place at UNESCO headquarters in Paris and New York on January 25. UNESCO has also started a “planet learning festival” that will encourage and celebrate learning in all spheres of life.

The central government also released last year the draft of its New Education Policy that emphasizes primary education in the mother tongue, skills development, multiple exit options for students enrolled in higher education. Among other significant measures, the NEP aims to abolish regulatory institutions such as the UGC program, AICTE, and M.Phil. The policy document has also aimed to make all educational institutions in the country multidisciplinary.
