The winners of the competition “Fashion Manifestation” of young fashion designers – Fashion – Egoiste – have been awarded

This year, an innovation was introduced in determining the winners – the division into three categories “secondary education”, “bachelor studies” and “master studies”, from which one Grand Prix winner is nominated among the winners. This is done with the aim of highlighting the current best performance at each level of education, creating a healthy competition between competitors with similar education, while also serving as an incentive for young people from different levels of education to enter the competition in the future.

Laura Valtere, the winner of the Grand Prix, receives the two-week fashion marketing and management course NABA-Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in the summer of 2022 and the publicity of the collection in the magazine “Lilit LOOK”.

Laura Valtere is currently studying at the Latvian Academy of Arts, Department of Fashion Art in the 4th year of the bachelor’s program and has graduated from the Clothing Design Department of the Riga Secondary School of Design and Art. The author of the collection “Self-Portrait” was inspired by Alejandro Jodorovsky’s film “The Holy Mountain”, which encouraged looking into the “mirror of self” – accepting, getting to know and falling in love with one’s body, oneself and life. The collection is like a reflection of the author, which deeply depicts the author’s inner world, feelings and memories that anyone will be able to understand and empathize with. The costumes are created by experimenting with different materials, digital printing options, and using deeply personal symbols.

The winner of the competition “Secondary Education” nomination Emilija Ratkus won the publicity of the collection in the magazine “Pastaiga”. In 2021, she graduated from the clothing design program of the Riga Secondary School of Design and Art. She is currently working on private sewing and apparel design jobs and plans to enroll in the apparel design department at Parsons New School in New York. The inspiration for the collection “Game Planet”, created within the framework of the qualification work, was found in the art of Jazz Charles de Castellazhak, a supporter of ridiculous fashion, which encouraged the authors to wear soft toys. Fascinated by the breadth and variety of the bird’s eye view, the author wanted to reflect the variety of relief in his jackets by using materials of different thicknesses.

Elīna Grīnberga, as the winner in the category “Master’s studies”, won the opportunity to sell the collection “House of British Brands” for one month in 2022. Elīna is a student of the Latvian Academy of Arts, majoring in fashion art, who is currently studying fashion design for a semester at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon within the framework of the Erasmus program. In parallel with her studies, she works on her own clothing brand. The central theme of Elīna’s collection “Reflection” is narcissism and an image from ancient Greek mythology Narcissus – a beautiful young man, a hunter who fell in love with his reflection and died for his love for himself. The collection is borrowed from the men’s wardrobe worn by a woman, because narcissism is mostly talked about in the context of men. The colors in the collection are classic, using denim as an accent. The collection of accessories is complemented by hats that are handmade.

9 collections were on display on December 20 as part of the competition. From the Latvian Academy of Arts, four collections created by its students – Elīna Grīnberga, Ilze Muciņa, Una Pūpola, Laura Valtere – took part in the exhibition. Three collections, the authors of which are Paula Vēvere, Renāte Liepniece and Emīlija Ratkusa, represented the final of the Riga Secondary School of Design and Art. Evija Lipšāne and Laura Salmane represented Riga Technical University in the final.

The tradition of organizing a competition for young fashion designers was established in 2016 by the Latvian Fashion Chamber (LMP). It is a non-governmental organization in Latvia established by fashion professionals in 2010. LMP aims to develop and promote the growth of the Latvian fashion industry by organizing fashion shows, discussions, presentations, contact exchanges, thus providing an opportunity for Latvian fashion designers and brands to offer new collections to a wide range of customers locally and internationally, as well as to support Latvian fashion consumption.
