The Vice President of the EC admits mistakes in the vaccination strategy

Frans Timmermans, Vice-President of the European Commission (EC), has acknowledged that the European Union (EU) has made mistakes in developing a coronavirus vaccination strategy for Member States.

“It is true that mistakes were made when ordering vaccines in Brussels, as well as in the Member States,” the EC vice-president said in an interview with the German newspaper Tagesspiegel on Sunday.

“I am ready to take a critical look at the end of the pandemic – then we will be able to see what we did wrong and what we did right,” he said.

However, the first thing to do is to ensure that “the whole of Europe gets the vaccine,” Timmermans said.

A European approach is “also in the interests of the richest member states”, such as Germany, EC President Urzula von der Leiena added in an interview.

The EC has ordered a total of 1.4 billion doses of four EU-approved vaccines, and in theory this should be more than enough for 450 million people.

However, the EC has been criticized for its indecisive approach and strategic mistakes in ordering vaccines.

Some EU capitals consider the distribution of vaccine doses among Member States to be unfair.
