The United States broke its daily record of covid-19 infections with 45,330 this Friday, 26-J, bringing the confirmed cases in the country worst hit by the pandemic to 2,462,057, according to the independent count of the University Johns Hopkins.

The balance at 20:00 local time (00:00 GMT on Saturday) also increases the death toll to 124,978 after adding 574 in the last 24 hours. In addition to the 574 this Friday, the 1,854 “probable” deaths in New Jersey reported by the state were also added to the count.

The United States broke this new record dragged down by the rebound of the pandemic in states in the south and west of the country such as Florida, Texas, California and Arizona, which number among the four about half of new infections in the entire country.

New York, however, remains the worst hit state in the United States for the coronavirus with 391,220 confirmed cases and 31,342 deaths, a figure just below Brazil, the United Kingdom and Italy.

In New York City alone, 22,421 people have died.

New York is followed by neighboring New Jersey with 14,914 dead, Massachusetts with 8,012 and Illinois with 6,847 dead.

Other states with a large number of deaths are Pennsylvania with 6,579, Michigan with 6,134, California with 5,816 or Connecticut with 4,307.

In terms of infections, California is the second state only behind New York with 202,072.

The provisional balance of deceased -124,978- has already exceeded the lowest level of the initial estimates of the White House, which projected at best between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths due to the pandemic.

President Donald Trump lowered those estimates and was confident that the final figure would rather be between 50,000 and 60,000 deaths, although in his latest calculations he already predicted up to 110,000 deaths, a number that has also been exceeded.

For its part, the Institute of Health Metrics and Assessments (IHME) of the University of Washington, in whose models of prediction of the evolution of the pandemic the White House often sets, calculates that the United States will arrive in October with about 180,000 dead.
