With a huge cultural center in a versatile building, New York wants to create a platform for art in the 21st century. “The Shed” is part of the new Hudson Yards district, the largest and most expensive non-public building project in the USA.

After four years of construction and a cost of $ 404 million, “The Shed” is due to officially open on Friday. It has event rooms on a total of eight floors.

The lead architect Liz Diller described the building as “just muscles and no fat” during a preliminary inspection on Wednesday. The almost 40 meter high outer shell can be extended and the interior can be extended over several floors for up to 3000 spectators.

State-of-the-art stage technology including fiber optic internet should “make almost everything possible that artists can imagine,” said CEO Dan Doctoroff. The building should serve as a tool for them and continue to develop, said Diller.

Start with Gerhard Richter and Arvo Pärt

An exhibition by the German artist Gerhard Richter with music by the composers Steve Reich and Arvo Pärt is planned for the start. The program also includes a version of the ancient Greek drama “Helena” and a play by the Icelandic musician Björk.

It remains to be seen whether “The Shed” can assert itself in the city with 1200 cultural institutions. It is not clear why New York needs the new center, judged the website “ArtNet” and spoke of a “feeling of superfluity”. The Washington Post, on the other hand, wrote that “The Shed” was the only reason to visit the new Hudson Yards district, which New Yorkers hated.
