The Secrets Behind Finland’s World-Renowned Education System – Revealed!

Jakarta

The education system in Finland is known as the best in the world. Apart from being free, the education system carries a curriculum that focuses on children’s development as lifelong learners.

In Finland, the government has been very serious about developing education over the last few decades. In fact, education has become one of the foundations of the welfare of Finnish society.

In the past decade, the country has made rapid progress in reading, mathematics and scientific literacy. This is in large part because its teachers are trusted to do whatever it takes to change the lives of the younger generation.

So what are the other secrets that make Finland’s education system so good?

Strong Foundation in the Field of Literacy

When not studying science, geography and math, 9- and 10-year-old children in Finland are cracking open stacks of books. They would slowly read one after another, and devour all dozens of books.

This process is not instant. This is because the transformation of the Finnish education system began around 40 years ago as the main driver of the country’s economic recovery plan.

This process became visible in 2000, when the first results from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), showed that Finland’s young generation were the best young readers in the world, as explained in Smithsonian Magazine.

Teachers Really Know Each Student

Teachers in Finland are selected from the top 10 percent of the country’s graduates to earn master’s degrees in education. This aims to improve the quality of teachers.

The simplest result is that teachers spread across various regions can get to know each student. If one method fails, the teacher will consult with colleagues to try another method.

Teachers in this Nordic country also really enjoy the challenges. Nearly 30 percent of Finnish children receive special assistance during their first nine years of school.

In addition, teachers from all countries also contribute to the national curriculum which provides educational guidelines, not educational procedures.

No Ranking System

The Finnish education system has no required tests or exams, except for one exam at the end of a student’s final year of high school.

Apart from that, there is also no ranking. This is what allows the quality of students in Finland to develop optimally. Because, there is no comparison or competition between students, schools or regions.

Finnish children have a good chance of getting an education of the same quality, no matter whether he lives in the countryside or in a university town.

“Equality is the most important word in Finnish education” said Olli Luukkainen, president of the Finnish teachers’ union.

Ninety-three percent of Finns graduate from academic or vocational high school and 66 percent go on to higher education.

“We prepare children to learn how to study, not how to take exams. We are not very interested in PISA. That is not our goal,” said Pasi Sahlberg, a former mathematics and physics teacher in Finland.
