New Year’s fireworks: special measures in major German cities
Bonn: Due to the corona pandemic, Bonn bans firing on New Year’s Eve. From December 31, 5 p.m. to January 1, 6 a.m., the city announced that it was “prohibited to carry and use fireworks on all public roads, paths and squares as well as in public facilities throughout Bonn’s urban area.” The public order office will check compliance with the police. “Violations will be punished consistently, fireworks will be secured”, threatened the municipality. The reason for the tightening is the high corona numbers in Bonn.
Dresden: The sale of fireworks is already banned nationwide, Dresden goes one step further: In the Saxon state capital, firecrackers and rockets are completely banned on New Year’s Eve. Details should be given in a general decree that is to be issued in the coming days.
Cologne: Due to the corona pandemic, Cologne prohibits firing on New Year’s Eve in parts of the city. From December 31, 8 p.m. to January 1, 3 a.m., the ignition and burning of fireworks, flares, rockets, Bengali fire, smoke powder or other pyrotechnic objects will be prohibited in well-known firecrackers hotspots, the city announced on Friday. The ban applies to the area around the cathedral, the old town, the bridges, the banks of the Rhine and nightlife areas such as the Belgian Quarter, the Südstadt and the Zülpicher Viertel. But the centers of districts such as Chorweiler and Mülheim are also affected. The fireworks ban should serve to prevent the formation of crowds. In addition, it should ensure that the hospitals are not overburdened by additional patients, such as burn injuries.
Despite the ban on the sale of firecrackers, there should be a kind of fireworks display in the city of Cologne on New Year’s Eve: Under the motto: “Lights on. Year off. ”People should turn the light on and off again and again at home for five minutes at midnight. The city speaks of the “largest light fireworks in the world”. The advertising campaign for the action started on Friday.
Stuttgart: In the Stuttgart city center it is not allowed to bawl on New Year’s Eve. A fireworks ban applies within the City-Ring and in other busy places, as the state capital announced. The consumption of alcohol is also prohibited in these areas. The ban was issued for reasons of safety and infection protection. You do not want to start the new year with a wave of infections, said Mayor Fritz Kuhn (Greens). “Wild partying and bullying really don’t have to be this year.” The ban applies from New Year’s Eve until 2:00 am on New Year’s Eve. During this time it is forbidden to carry rockets or firecrackers on the streets and squares concerned or to burn them down.
Firecracker bans on New Year’s Eve 2020: The situation in the federal states
Baden-Württemberg: The nationwide sales ban on fireworks also applies in Baden-Württemberg, and according to the state ordinance, fireworks and firecrackers from previous years should also “not be ignited”, since they may be damaged by incorrect storage and igniting “with an increased risk of injury” could go hand in hand, it says in the regulation. Firing old fireworks is not explicitly forbidden. In the city center of the state capital Stuttgart, however, there is a complete ban on firecrackers.
Bayern: The cities and municipalities themselves decide how the ban on firecrackers will be implemented in the Free State of Bavaria. Some cities, including Würzburg, Augsburg and Ingolstadt, have banned firecrackers in busy places for several years.
Berlin: In the city of Berlin are according to RBB two firecrackers prohibition zones planned around Pallasstrasse in Schöneberg and on Alex. All other places in the city are generally allowed to shoot. But that shouldn’t happen in larger groups. From December 31st at 2 p.m. there is also a ban on alcohol sales.
Brandenburg: In Brandenburg’s larger cities there is disagreement about a ban on firecrackers. Potsdam is planning such at least for some places, as reported by the “Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung”. “We are currently examining where the use of pyrotechnics should be prohibited,” said Mayor Mike Schubert. Cities like Brandenburg an der Havel or Frankfurt / Oder are currently dispensing with bans and appealing to the common sense of their citizens.
Bremen: With a view to the firecrackers ban, Bremen wants to decide on a complete firecrackers ban on Tuesday. Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) announced this during a debate about the corona lockdown in the Bremen citizenship, as reported by the news magazine “buten un binnen”.
Hamburg: For a long time it was not clear whether there would be gun bans in the Hanseatic city due to the Corona crisis. It is now clear: not only the sale, but also the setting down of fireworks is prohibited. Anyone who violates the requirements must expect penalties.
Hessen: Hessen is currently examining a ban on firecrackers in the city of Frankfurt. There were already prohibited zones in the banking city in recent years.
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Also in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania it will probably be much quieter at Silverster, there is a ban on firecrackers on public roads and squares. Violations are punished with fines between 50 and 1000 euros. “The sanction options have been increased again to send a clear signal. Anyone who violates the New Year’s Eve regulations in spite of all the bans is doing so consciously, ”said Interior Minister Torsten Renz (CDU).
Lower Saxony: On New Year’s Eve, the country not only wants to completely ban the sale, but also the carrying and burning of fireworks, as the new Corona regulation shows. The Higher Administrative Court in Lüneburg temporarily suspended the fireworks ban in the Lower Saxony Corona Ordinance. Such a comprehensive ban on fireworks is not necessary as an infection protection measure, it said on Friday (December 18) in a message from the court.
North Rhine-Westphalia: Publicly organized fireworks and the use of pyrotechnics in public places and streets to be specified by the responsible authorities are prohibited on December 31st in North Rhine-Westphalia. However, there is no general ban on setting off fireworks and firecrackers at the turn of the year. North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Armin Laschet appealed to the citizens to refrain from burning fireworks if possible, even if they had already been bought.
Rhineland-Palatinate: According to Prime Minister Malu Dreyer, fireworks in busy places and streets should be prohibited on New Year’s Eve. A general ban is not planned.
Saarland: Fireworks on New Year’s Eve in busy places and streets should also be prohibited in Saarland.
Saxony: There is no general ban on firecrackers in Saxony either. Anyone who has already bought firecrackers and rockets can ignite them privately. In order not to burden the hospitals with additional injuries, the Ministry of the Interior advises against it. Dresden is an exception – the lighting of firecrackers and fireworks is to be completely prohibited in the state capital.
Saxony-Anhalt: It is still unclear whether there will be a general ban on firecrackers in Saxony-Anhalt. “Our citizens decide exactly in the week before whether any measure is necessary at the turn of the year,” said Saxony-Anhalt’s Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff. The people in Saxony-Anhalt would have it in their own hands with their behavior.
Schleswig-Holstein: Fireworks may not be used on areas where increased traffic is to be expected on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s. The serving and consumption of alcoholic beverages in public are prohibited across the country.
Thuringia: In Thuringia, too, according to the current status, no fireworks may be ignited in public places or busy streets.
