The population decline in Russia jumped by almost 60%

Thousands of Russians have died from coronavirus this year

The population of the Russian Federation as of January 1, 2021 became the minimum since the beginning of 2014 – then it was 143.7 million.

In the first six months of 2021 in Russia, the natural population decline – the excess of the number of deaths over the number of births – increased by 58.9% compared to January-June 2020 and amounted to 421,900 people against 265,600 a year earlier. On Friday, August 6, reports Interfax with reference to Rosstat data.

The number of births in the first half of 2021 decreased by 0.4% – to 678 112 children from 680 974 a year earlier. The number of deaths in the first half of 2021 increased by 16.2% – to 1,100,044 people from 946,539 people a year earlier.

At the same time, in 2020, the natural population decline in Russia more than doubled – to 688,700 people from 316,200 people in 2019. This indicator became the highest since 2005 – then the natural population decline was 846 600 people.

According to Rosstat, the population of Russia in 2020 decreased by more than 0.5 million people (due to positive migration, the population decreased slightly less than the natural decline), to 146.24 million.

The population as of January 1, 2021 became the minimum since the beginning of 2014 – then it was 143.7 million.

Recall that from January to May 2021, the mortality rate of the population increased in Ukraine. It exceeded the 2020 level by 25%. Almost 300 thousand Ukrainians died, which is almost 60 thousand deaths more than in the same period last year.
