CELEBRITIES Mischa Barton (35) became world famous at the age of seventeen for her role as Marissa Cooper in ‘The OC’, but she was not too happy with that. The fame had major consequences for her mental health. “I haven’t processed my trauma yet,” the actress reveals in an interview with ‘The Sunday Times’.
When Barton made her debut on ‘The OC’, she never expected she would become so famous. “It wasn’t something I aspired to. I would much rather have remained anonymous,” she admits to ‘The Sunday Times’. As a seventeen-year-old, she was followed every day by paparazzi, who would do anything for the perfect photo. “They tried to climb over the walls of my house and bribe the restaurants I frequented. I was stalked,” she remembers. One day it became too much for the actress. “I felt like I was slowly going crazy. I felt really helpless.”
In addition, the ‘Neighbours’ star also had to deal with online hate messages early on. “Nothing I did was good enough. A lot of negative messages were written about me. It was the height of cruelty to the bodies of young women,” said Barton, who was traumatized by the negative side of her international fame. “You can go to therapy every day for the rest of your life. But there’s just a certain amount of trauma that I went through as a teenager and in my twenties that doesn’t just go away. I haven’t processed it yet.”

Barton is therefore pleased that there is more talk about depression and anxiety these days. “For example, you can see how many people regret what they did to Britney Spears,” she explains.
