The oases and black spots of Pamplona

From the Medea study3 it can be deduced that in general lines, poor neighborhoods are more at risk of death, and the opposite is true for rich neighborhoods. But it is not an exact law. Neighborhoods, even streets or groups of blocks, sometimes have peculiarities.

OLD TOWN RISK NEIGHBORHOOD FOR MEN

The Old Town is one of the neighborhoods of Pamplona which yields worse mortality risk data, especially in men. Conjugating all the diseases, it could be deduced that in the area around 15% more men die than expected for some of the diseases considered in the study. It is a phenomenon that occurs especially in bladder or colorectal cancer, diabetes mellitus, liver disease or ischemic heart disease. On the contrary, the area shows good data in another pathology, prostate cancer. The women of Casco Viejo suffer less. Furthermore, on average female mortality is 4% lower than expected.

The neighborhood areas with more deprivation problems are those that register greater risks. This is the case especially of the sections that include Barefoot, Jarauta, the Plaza de Recoletas … On the other hand, the best data are given in those that include the Plaza del Castillo, the end of Estafeta and the vicinity of the Labrit fronton and the Arzobispado, which are among the richest in the area.

ENSANCHES AN AREA WITH GOOD DATA

The Ensanches confirm that better living conditions lead to better health. The district includes several of the areas with the lowest rates of deprivation, that is, the richest, and with the lowest excess risk of mortality, that is, the healthiest.

In the case of men, it can be concluded that they have about 3% less excess mortality, and the data are very good in deaths from dementias and colon cancer. If you look at women, the picture even improves. On average, the excess mortality is 7.5% lower than the average. Although the numbers are not entirely good in one case, lung cancerSome of its areas are among the best in the city for colon, breast and hematological cancer, diabetes, stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

As in all neighborhoods, there are areas that stand out. In this case, the section in which good data from both men and women coincide is the one that includes the end of Yanguas and Miranda and the start of Avenida de Zaragoza. The one that offers the worst data, and they are not particularly bad, is precisely the one that does not belong to the Ensanche: the entire area that the study mistakenly unifies as a single electoral section and that extends through Mendillorri and a good part of the Soto de Lezkairu.

SAN JUAN – ERMITAGAÑA GOOD WITH DARK SPOTS

The district that includes San Juan, Ermitagaña and Mendebaldea enjoys some of the areas with the best purchasing power in the city and, accordingly, they are neighborhoods where the probability of dying from some of the diseases studied is lower than in others. Specifically, for men it is about 3% lower and several of its sections show very good data on pathologies such as stroke, bladder cancer or AIDS. In men, the entire area that includes the hospitals stands out, and in women, an area framed by the beginning of Barañáin avenues and Sancho el Fuerte avenues.

Two aspects overshadow this good outlook. First, in women the figures are much less positive. Moreover, in the average of the different diseases it turns out that more women have died in these neighborhoods than was foreseeable. It is a small percentage, 1.3%, but it contrasts with that obtained by men, negative.

Second, two points stand out for their negative data. One of those sections, the houses that face the Vaguada de San Juan and are closer to Avenida de Navarra, are among those with the highest excess mortality in colon and breast cancer, dementias, ischemic heart disease or COPD. Something similar occurs in a district that includes the houses near Anaitasuna and the slope of La Reina, which extends towards the Trinitarios park and even reaches the residence of the Oblatas. It is the area of the city with more excess mortality from colon cancer and stroke, both in men and women, and for stomach and breast cancer, diabetes, dementia, heart disease, COPD and liver disease in women.

ITURRAMA – ECHAVACOIZ THE BEST NUMBERS

As could be expected since it is one of the areas with the lowest deprivation index, the entire district occupied by Iturrama, the data can be classified as the best in the whole city. This is especially the case with men, who have almost 7% less risk and who offer some of the best figures in the city on AIDS, lung cancer, diabetes, heart disease, COPD, liver … and they only seem to have a weak point in hematologic cancer.

In the case of women, the data is still good, but not so good. That average index is still negative, but already only 2%. There is no one among these areas that stands out clearly due to its best data.

They are more uniform neighborhoods, but some areas do stand out , such as the square formed by the streets Fuente del Hierro, Iñigo Arista, Iturrama and Serafín Olave, the area of the Traffic Headquarters, or the surroundings of the Iturrama Public School, blocks that in men give the best data of the city for a dozen Of diseases.

The neighborhood it also has two black dots. One is the triangle framed between Vuelta del Castillo, Abejeras street and Sancho el Fuerte avenue, one of the worst sections in colon, bladder, diabetes, dementia, heart disease, stroke or liver disease if we talk about men, and in cancer stomach or hematological, heart disease or liver disease in women. The presence in those blocks of a residence like Mecca it is certainly behind many of these numbers. The other black point corresponds to a neighborhood with a reality very different from Iturrama, although it is included in the same electoral district, the Urdánoz group.

MIRACULOUS WOMEN’S NEIGHBORHOOD

The Differences between men and women that occur in various neighborhoods of the Navarrese capital stand out in La Milagrosa and Santa María la Real, and in favor of them. The deaths of women in these areas have averaged 8% less than expected. They are especially relevant in ischemic heart disease (six of its nine sections are among the best in the city), but also in dementia, COPD, liver disease, breast or hematological cancer.

The data for men is not bad, but it is not as bright. Male deaths in La Milagrosa have been on average almost exactly what was expected, less in diseases such as stomach or prostate cancer, and more in pathologies such as dementia.

CHANTREA A MORE PUNISHED AREA

Txantrea and Orvina include some of the areas with the highest deprivation index in Pamplona. Perhaps that is why the study has detected more mortality than expected. It is an especially high figure in the case of men, who have a risk exceeded by almost 8%. A good number of Txantrea areas are among the worst in the city in terms of male mortality from COPD, diabetes, lung cancer or AIDS. On the contrary, the men of the neighborhood give the best data in Pamplona in hematological cancer: 11 of its 13 sections are among the 20 with the least excess risk in the city.

In the case of women, excess risk averages about 3% and it is seen especially in stomach cancer, but also in colon cancer, diabetes, COPD and liver diseases. But women also have their strengths: six sections of Txantrea are among the best in lung cancer.

If any zone stands out for bad data in both sexes it is made up of several buildings on Ezcaba Street, right on the municipal border with Burlada.

ROCHAPEA – SAN JORGE WORSE FOR WOMEN

If in La Milagrosa the data were better for women than for men, in the electoral district made up of La Rochapea and San Jorge, the opposite occurs. As corresponds with neighborhoods that include some of the areas with plus city deprivation index, in both sexes there are more deaths than expected, but if the average in men is 1.4%, in women it is over 9%. This phenomenon is much more evident in San Jorge than in La Rochapea.

In any case, if there is an area with particularly negative data, you have to go to La Rochapea, to the blocks limited by Errotazar Street and Marcelo Celayeta Avenue, which correspond largely to the houses of San Pedro. They are between those with a higher incidence in men AIDS, stomach cancer, lung cancer, COPD and liver diseases, among others, while in women they give high figures risk in colon, breast, hematological cancer, diabetes, dementia, stroke, COPD and liver disease. The reverse of the coin, with the best data in the area especially in men, It can be seen in a wide section that includes from the Compassion school to the Rochapea UDC, and in that area that includes Urzainqui and Vidángoz streets.
