A few weeks ago Netflix had launched its enormous advertising capacity to announce the premiere of its latest “tank”, The Adam Project (The Adam Project), the film that reunited director Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds, after the success of Free Guythe movie of the bank teller that belongs to a game in which he is nothing more than a filler character.
That is why it was to be expected that its premiere would make a lot of noise and that It quickly rose to the top of the most watched rankings around the world. And reasons were not lacking: not only the aforementioned duo, but also a little Walker Scobell, who could be seen quite loose and talented in the trailer or pre-release interviews. And of course, the return of Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner as a couple, remembering the movie If I had 30the 2004 romantic comedy that resonated well with teen audiences.
The question that arises is whether all the hype around the film is justified in its 106-minute runtime.
The Adam Project is a movie where a young Adam (Walker Scobell) Lives with his mother (Jennifer Garner), suffers from bullying at school and has a particular way of expressing himself. One night at her house, while her mother was away, she receives a particular visit from the Adam of the future. (Ryan Reynolds)a fighter pilot who arrives with an injury and a confused situation.
There they will begin to reveal the reasons that led Adam to travel in time, the role of his father in this story (Mark Ruffalo)and Reynolds himself will discover that much of his mission is different from what he believed.
This science fiction story ends up making more focus on the emotional conflicts and the characteristic humor of Reynolds than on the action scenes that the trailer promises. And it’s not a bad thing per se. The chemistry between the two Adams is undeniable. Young Scobell’s talent works perfectly, maintaining Reynolds’ tone and fluidity in several passages that are truly entertaining. Furthermore, the rediscovery of Adam, his ways of relating to love and loss and his relationship with his father have an emotional touch that, although it is a little exaggerated, works as a connector for the plot.
A separate paragraph deserves the work of visual effects, one of the strong points of the film, demonstrating the enormous work and dedication of Netflix to achieve a product up to the task in that section.
The downside is that it doesn’t really add anything new to the genre, nor does it have any surprising twists. Probably without the touch of the actors the film would have been much more boring. The references to Star Wars or Star Trek, which are novel at first, lose efficiency during the course of the film, becoming somewhat obvious. This is not enough to make it a bad movie, but it does take away some points.
The film is ideal to enjoy with the family. It’s a light film that doesn’t deliver much more than it promises: entertainment and Reynolds playing Reynolds (a gag they use even in promotional interviews prior to the premiere). An enjoyable and entertaining movie. but that probably will not remain in the memory of the majority of its public.
