The Ministry of Health reveals how monkeypox is transmitted, there are already 3,335 cases in the world

There are a number of ways of transmitting monkeypox that the public needs to be aware of. Because this zoonotic disease is not only transmitted from animal to animal, but also to humans.

Spokesman for the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) Dr. Mohammad Syahril, explained that so far there have been around 3,335 cases of monkeypox reported worldwide, some of which came from non-endemic countries.

“Well, since May 13, 2022, several non-endemic countries have reported (monkeypox) that there are 28 countries. Whether it’s from Europe, America, Australia, and lastly yesterday in Singapore,” he said in a virtual press conference related to ‘Update on Handling COVID-19 19, Acute Hepatitis and Monkeypox in Indonesia’, Friday (24/6/2022).

“There are currently 3,335 cases in the world, 298 suspects, and 117 who have been removed,” he continued.

dr Syahril explained that the incubation period for monkeypox or the time of infection until symptoms appear is approximately 5 to 13 days or 5 to 21 days. So, what are the ways of transmitting monkeypox? Here’s the information.

How to transmit monkeypox

On the same occasion, Dr. Syahril also revealed a number of ways of transmitting monkeypox. The method is as follows.

Animal to Human

  • Direct contact with blood (monkeys, mice, squirrels)
  • Body fluids
  • Skin lesions or mucosal lesions from infected animals
  • Infected wild animal meat (bush meat) can also be a route of disease transmission

“So monkeypox can be transmitted from animal to animal, there are monkeys, there are squirrels. Then also from animals to humans. From animals to humans, the transmission is still direct contact with animals with monkeypox. Through body fluids, especially If you have smallpox around your face, hands, or body, if it hits us, it can be a source of infection,” said Dr. Syahril.

“Including the animal’s meat which is not cooked properly, this can also be a source of transmission to humans,” he continued.

Man to Man

While the ways of transmission of monkeypox from human to human, such as:

  • Direct contact with blood, body fluids, or skin or facial lesions
  • respiratory tract. Close contact for a long time or droplets occur, it can be a source of transmission
  • Inoculation, such as through microlesion of the skin, trauma, bites, and scratches
  • Mother-to-child transmission through the placenta

“Well, while human to human, the contact can be through blood, body fluids, or smallpox on the face, in the mouth, on the hands, or on the body. That is if there is direct contact. There are also those through the respiratory tract. If it takes a long time or droplets occur, then it can be a source of transmission. And there is also transmission from mother to baby through transmission or the placenta,” he said again.
