The Mediterranean Diet: A 29% Reduction in Stomach Cancer Risk

An analysis of more than 11 studies showed that people who follow the Mediterranean diet daily reduce their risk of stomach cancer by 29 percent.

Stomach cancer is the fourth cause of cancer death in men and the fifth in women. Among the risk factors, in addition to genetic predisposition, are stomach infections with Helicobacter pylori (H Pylori) bacteria, smoking, and following a diet rich in salty products and low in fresh vegetables and fruits.

Accordingly, researchers from the Department of Nutrition at Zhejiang Hospital in China sought to find out the extent of the effect of the Mediterranean diet in preventing stomach cancer, especially since this diet is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables.

The Mediterranean diet emphasizes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, seafood, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and antioxidant-rich herbs and spices.

Chinese researchers analyzed the results of 11 studies that included about one million people. The results revealed that compared to people who follow this type of diet sparingly, higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with a 29 percent lower risk of stomach cancer.

This diet has been known over the past years for its role in preventing some chronic non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and some types of cancer. The researchers stated that “given the characteristics of the Mediterranean diet, it could be an ideal diet for reducing the risk of stomach cancer.”
