Composer Jānis Lūsēns has led far away from the bustle of the city in recent months, and his indispensable ritual every night has been to watch the sunsets. The magical beauty he experienced inspired him to create a concert program, which is also called “Songs of the Sunset” and in which his music intertwined with the compositions of Mārtiņš Brauns. In the concerts, both composers will be on stage, improvising and playing together, and they will be joined by two great singers – Zigfrīds Muktupāvels and Ieva Sutugova. –

Sunset moods at the concerts will be very important, so they will start at nine in the evening and take place on the most beautiful Latvian open-air stages. The first of the concerts will take place this Friday, July 3, in Ikšķile.
“I would like one composer to inhabit one stage, the other to inhabit the other stage, and there will be live fire trees on both sides that will burn …” In the attempt, producer Aigars Dinsbergs introduces the musicians to the intended visual image of the stage. It is important that it fits into the overall atmosphere of the concert, which is intended to be free, open and cordial, as it is already on a summer evening, being with nature with good friends.
The concert will be dominated by well-known songs, and by playing them, both the composers and singers will allow themselves to improvise freely, play, sing, use various musical instruments. It is quite certain that each concert will look quite different.
Such close collaboration between two such bright composers is really rare. It turns out that the author of the initiative is Jānis Lūsēns.
He says: “It was my idea, because it seemed necessary to find a way to overcome this feeling of downtime and unnecessaryness. And then it occurred to me that this could be something very interesting and new. It occurred to me after this spring that I lived in my school in the Valka district, and I have such a pond with a footbridge, and in fact I didn’t miss almost any evening, I sat on that footbridge and enjoyed the sunset. There is a fantastic landscape.
And then it seemed to me that my and Mārtiņš’s songs would fit very well in such an atmosphere. It just kind of happened naturally. ”
In such a close tandem, both are working for the first time, but before that they have had good cooperation in various projects. Mārtiņš Brauns sees both the different and the common in the sense of music.
“It may be that the language of improvisation is a little different for everyone, but there is something in common that we have solved in the conversation, that we love music that can be perceived, that works, that works, where there is something to remember, not just music. for a person with a higher musical education, but who is simply a musical and music-loving person, ”says Mārtiņš Brauns.
When talking about the concert repertoire, both are quite mysterious, but some cards are still revealed.
“We are going to play what people love, what we can play with, but what we can play a little differently than we have heard so far.
Let’s not do without “I long for you” or “Sing with me, daughter of nations”. Also “Savoy World” and “Poet’s Song”, but I would not like to reveal much. I think that every listener will find a pleasant and live song, ”notes Mārtiņš Brauns.
The fact that two such authors meet in one program is also called an incredible adventure by the singers who will take part in the concerts, Ieva Sutugova and Zigfrīds Muktupāvels.
Muktupāvels emphasizes: “I expect this concert tour to be like an exciting adventure, not like working on a conveyor belt, but really making music together that is most enjoyable for all four of us.”
Sutugova, on the other hand, notes: “I went home after the previous attempt and thought for a long time – as if two seemed opposite. [komponisti] – one is a romantic, a melodic, where, as they say, you can “tie your heart”, but you can both beat the other’s music and mourn on the stage in the choir, but their tandem, their playing together, and the fact that they are ready to play each other’s music , both to supplement and to sing – well it ‘s something magical.
It has not been, and I do not know whether there will be more after this project. It’s very interesting for me. “
For the first time, the joint concert program of Mārtiņš Brauns and Jānis Lūsēns “Songs of the Sunset” will be performed on Friday, July 3, at the Ikšķile stage. Afterwards, concerts in Dikļi, Alūksne, Kuldīga, Baldone, Madona and elsewhere.
