The Mac mini M2 could keep the same design

The next model of Mac mini equipped with the Apple M2 chip could well keep the same design as its predecessor, the same that Apple has used since 2010. This is Ming-Chi Kuo who whispers this indiscretion to us, adding that this new model will not be marketed before 2023. Last week, the 9To5Mac site explained that Apple would have worked on the M1 Pro and M1 Max versions of the Mac mini, but that the project would have been abandoned in favor of the Mac Studio. A Mac mini capable of receiving the M2 or M2 Pro chip (but not M2 Max) would now be in development, but 9To5Mac was indeed planning a launch as early as 2022.

Regarding the design, it was Jon Prosser who was the first, in May 2021, to announce a thinner Mac mini with a redesigned design, with a glass or Plexiglas plate on the top of the chassis. Two months earlier, Jon Prosser had also shown us what would turn out a year later to be the Mac Studio: not everything was correct, but it was close enough to reality that we could reasonably think that the leaker could approach a prototype that was not yet finalized.

It is thus possible that the thinner Mac mini did exist in Apple’s labs but that it was ultimately not retained. For some users, that might be good news: the Mac mini M1 isn’t packed to the brim, and downsizing its chassis wouldn’t have been difficult for the engineers in Cupertino, especially if they were going without the fan like on the MacBook Air. If Apple ends up keeping the current design, it is tempting to deduce that more muscular configurations with the Apple M2 Pro chip and a large fan will benefit from this volume. It remains to be seen when…
