The lost Falcon rocket hits the Moon in a few weeks – ČT24 – Czech Television

However, the second stage of the rocket found itself in an interesting situation at that moment: it did not have enough fuel to return safely to Earth, but at the same time, according to meteorologist Eric Berger, it lacked the energy to escape Earth’s gravity and head for the depths of space. Berrger described the fate of the rocket on the Ars Technica website.

“So since February 2015, he has been following a rather chaotic path,” said Berger. The four-ton rocket flies at about 2.58 kilometers per second and headed for the moon. At this speed and along this trajectory, it should hit him in about a few weeks.

Bill Gray, the author of software for tracking near-Earth objects, asteroids, smaller planets and comets, told the British Guardian that the upper stage of Falcon 9 is very likely to hit the far side of the moon, near the equator, apparently on March 4.
