The Last of Us Part II

Indeed, after revealing that the game was initially planned in the open world, the studio is now tackling the part that divided the players: the story. Because yes, The Last of Us Part II could have been slightly different, because (or thanks, it depends) to many scenes cut during the final editing. In an interview for IndieWire, the creators of the game, Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, revealed some of the alternative or deleted scenes that were ultimately discarded in the final version. “One of the most conflicting points was the death of Joël”, explained Druckmann, who said the scene was originally very different: “Her brain was screwed up at the time and the only word that came out of her mouth was the name of her daughter, Sarah. We thought it was a very powerful ending at the time, but then we thought it was best to be quiet. Both versions were made and, in the end, we found stronger the fact that the two characters look at each other without saying anything.

Gross also confirmed that the game was originally set to last five days instead of three, and that Joël had a girlfriend in his life, although this idea was quickly dismissed. Regarding Ellie, Druckmann explained: “There was a whole parallel story in which she went on the island of Serafita. We had a lot to say about the struggle between the protagonist and this new enemy sect. ”.

They also revealed that some scenes deepening Ellie’s current life have been removed : “In the sequence of the farm, you can find an entry in her journal where she writes on the feeling that one has when killing a boar. There was a whole playable streak on the hunt and it was incredible, but we thought that for reasons of rhythm and production, it was better to eliminate it. The realization was however already in the box, with as always Ashley Johnson who did a great job in terms of movement. ”

The words of the two designers clearly show that the possibilities of The Last of Us Part II and its history was immense and that the studio had to fight already internally to arrive at the final result. Which ultimately affects the reactions of the players. For now, the game continues to reap good sales figures and is already at the top of the charts, summarizing pretty well the hype and the expectation that this sequel will have generated.
