The Importance of Vitamin D in Rainy Season and How to Stay Healthy

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Internal medicine specialist at the Central General Hospital (RSUP) Prof. Dr. IGNG Ngoerah Bali, Dr. Anak Agung Ayu Yuli Gayatri advises people to consume more vitamin D when entering the rainy season.

“What is necessary now is to consume vitamin D, seasonally Rain it’s prone to disease. “Currently, there are many studies that prove that vitamin D can fight disease, whether in the form of viruses, bacteria or others, because it can carry out defense mechanisms through the formation of certain proteins,” said Yuli in a Ministry of Health podcast which was attended in Jakarta, Monday (20 /11/2023).

Yuli explained that Indonesia is one of the countries with the most vitamin D deficiency in the world, so apart from exercising more in the sun, people also need to take supplements that contain vitamin D, because it can increase the body’s endurance.

Yuli explained several diseases that often appear during the rainy season, including influenza, dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), diarrhea and leptospirosis.

“Generally what happens is flu, it is transmitted through splashes of saliva or phlegm from human to other human, when inhaled you will experience influenza, with general symptoms of infection in the form of fever, headache, muscle aches, decreased appetite, runny nose, cough or sore throat. ,” he said.

Then, the cause of dengue fever is also a virus, only it is transmitted through intermediary animals, namely mosquitoes. Generally the case DBD increases when it rains, because mosquitoes breed more in stagnant water, for example on leaves, lush gardens, or containers that hold water.

He explained that the initial symptoms of dengue fever are fever that lasts for 2-7 days, accompanied by a typical headache behind the eyes.

“There are other symptoms too, namely muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, even diarrhea, and decreased appetite. This will also be followed by a decrease in platelets, so there is a risk of complications from spontaneous bleeding, or for example in women, when menstruating they become more abundant,” he explained.

Then, acute diarrhea, which is spread orally, for example from human excrement containing microbes and spread in water or soil, then on vegetables or food that is not washed cleanly, from eating utensils, or from the hands of servers that are not washed well , can also appear from flies that previously landed in dirt.

Apart from that, he continued, namely leptospirosis, which can be transmitted through the urine of pregnant rats bacteria leptospira, and exposed through food or an open wound of a person, or through the mucosa of the mouth, eyes, nose.

“Leptospirosis is prone to appearing in areas where flooding often occurs, so rat urine can be transmitted in puddles of water. Symptoms include fever, more prominent muscle pain, the eyes can become red, or problems with the kidneys or liver can occur,” he said.

To avoid these diseases, he emphasized the importance of maintaining one’s own immune system, including getting enough sleep for 7-8 hours, consuming nutrient-rich foods with sufficient calories, and containing protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

“For environmental factors, do 3M (drain, cover, bury) or eradicate mosquito nests, in your own home also try to avoid dead-end drains, rubbish that risks holding water, and eradicate flies and rats which can cause leptospirosis,” said Yuli Gayatri.
