Researchers have identified links between diabetes and functional and structural changes in the brain, showing that some complications of diabetes are associated with these brain changes.
A study conducted by experts from Michigan Medicine in the United States revealed that as type 2 diabetes persists longer, the likelihood of developing changes in the structure of the brain increases. For this research, data was analyzed from 51 middle-aged Pima American Indians living with type 2 diabetes. The team used a series of cognitive tests and MRI scans to explore the relationship between diabetes, cognitive function and brain state.
The obtained brain images indicated that the participants with longer experience of type 2 diabetes had a lower average cortical thickness, as well as a reduced volume of gray matter, along with an increase in the volume of hyperintensities in the white matter. The researchers believe these results reflect the negative impact long-term diabetes can have on brain health, underscoring the importance of preventing the early onset of type 2 diabetes.
Despite these structural changes, the cognitive ability of participants with type 2 diabetes did not show significant differences compared to those without the condition. However, the research team believes that the results suggest the need for early monitoring of cognitive impairment in patients with type 2 diabetes to ensure appropriate care and a better quality of life.
The researchers also noted that complications of diabetes, such as chronic kidney disease and damage to nerves and blood vessels in the heart, are correlated with structural changes in the brain. Another study by the team found that people with diabetic complications were two and a half times more likely to develop cognitive impairment in their 40s to 60s.
The research team noted that, surprisingly, neuropathy, a condition that affects many patients with diabetes, did not show a significant link to cognitive function in the study.
The results of this study provide important insight into the impact of diabetes on brain health and underscore the need for sustained efforts to educate the public about the risks of diabetes to brain health.
