The History and Significance of the Toyota Crown Emblem: From its Origins to Today

January 1st is the day the first-generation Crown was first shipped. Speaking of a crown, the emblem of the “crown” is a landmark, but why is this emblem always used instead of the Toyota mark?

Is the crown a sign of a special domestic car?

On January 1st, 69 years ago, Toyota Motor Corporation (currently Toyota Motor Corporation) launched the first-generation Toyopet Crown, Japan’s first purely domestically designed car, at the company’s Koromo Plant (currently the main factory). It was also the day when the first shipment was celebrated by everyone involved.

Speaking of the crown, the front crown emblem is a landmark, but why has this emblem been consistently used since ancient times instead of the Toyota manufacturer logo like other car models?

Why was it called “Crown” in the first place? According to the “50 Year History of Toyota Motor Corporation” published by Toyota, it says, “We named it Crown with the hope that it would secure the crown of private passenger cars.”

The name was given by Kiichiro Toyoda, the actual founder of Toyota, who apparently decided to name it “Crown” when Toyota began producing domestically produced passenger cars on its own.

The car’s name was “Crown,” so it became a crown emblem, but the first-generation “Crown,” which went on sale in 1955, did not have an emblem on its front grill. Since it became possible to be attached to the front with a minor change in 1960, this tradition has continued until the latest models.

Toyota has some car models with unique emblems that are not manufacturer logos, and the crown is one of them. According to Toyota, the reason why they use different emblem designs is because “each model has a different concept and history,” and models sold globally tend to use the Toyota emblem.

Although the Crown is now produced in China and has begun to expand globally, it has been a car model that has been consistently designed, produced, and sold in Japan for many years. Therefore, it does not wear the Toyota emblem and maintains its status as a special car. The current Toyota emblem was introduced in 1989, and the crown emblem has a much longer history.
