The former GAM commander has been monitored by the KPK since late 2022 before being arrested

KPK already monitoring the whereabouts of the former GAM Commander Izil Azhar since the end of 2022. Izil Azhar, who has been a fugitive since 2018, was finally arrested today.

“It’s true, Tuesday, January 24, 2023, with the help of a team from the Aceh Police, the team managed to find the KPK’s DPO on behalf of Izil Azhar. The DPO since November 30 2018 was found and secured around Banda Aceh,” said Head of KPK Reporting Unit Ali Fikri told reporters, Tuesday (24/1/2023).

“Previously, coordination between the KPK team and the Aceh Regional Police had been carried out since December 2022,” he added.

Izil Azhar is one of the suspects in the alleged gratification case for the Sabang pier project which also involved former Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf. Izil was announced by the KPK to be on the wanted list since 26 December 2018.

He was named by the KPK as a suspect along with Irwandi for allegedly receiving gratuities totaling IDR 32.45 billion. Izil has been summoned by investigators twice but has been absent.

Once in court on Monday, February 25 2019, Irwandi asked the panel of judges to present Izil Azhar who is referred to as the former Commander of GAM in the Sabang area. It is said that Izil will surrender if he receives orders from the Deputy Governor of Aceh for the 2012-2017 period, Muzakir Manaf.

“Izil Azhar is the crown witness, so that I am not slandered, please present me. I have given the method and got information from a GAM friend, Izil Azhar wants to surrender if ordered by his superior named Muzakir Manaf, former Deputy Governor of Aceh,” Irwandi said at the time.
