The Ford Ranger Surpasses Toyota Hilux as Australia’s Best-Selling Car in 2023

The Ford Ranger has been Australia’s car before, but it was only in the current generation that it managed to surpass the Toyota Hilux after seven years of ruling the market there. Together, these two models absolutely dominate sales.

The Toyota Hilux is a stalwart in the off-road pick-up market, and the Australian best-selling car charts have long lived up to it – the Hilux has been the best-selling car for seven years running. Last year, however, its sales dropped year-on-year from 64 to 61 thousand units, and as a result, it lost this title.

It was overtaken by the Ford Ranger, which Australians bought at just over 63,000 units – a third more than in 2022. For Ford, it also means it returns to the top spot after 28 years – the last time another Ford was the best-selling car was in 1995.

The Ranger, although an American car, is very much an Australian car now and in the last generation – that’s where the development takes place. However, the production is not, it is located in Thailand, the United States, South Africa, Argentina, Vietnam and China.

How big a lead these two cars have on the first two rows is shown by the sales figures in other places. Bronze was awarded to Isuzu D-Max – also an off-road pick-up truck – with 31,000 units sold. In other places, we see exclusively crossovers and offroads, including one electric car, the Tesla Model Y.

Among the brands, however, Toyota is still overwhelmingly in the lead with more than 215,000 units sold. The second Mazda did not even manage half with 100,000 units, in third place is Ford with less than 89,000 cars sold; so the ranger makes up over 2/3 of its total Australian sales.
