Widodo and FIFA president Gianni Infantino met today to discuss the scandal that has caused several victims since the fans invaded the pitch and clashed with the police.
In the chaos that ensued, even after police fired tear gas, spectators were crushed and trampled to death when they tried to exit the arena, where several gates could not be opened.
Kanjuruhan Stadium is not up to FIFA’s safety requirements and now the arena will be demolished and a modern equivalent built from scratch.
– We are a football-loving country where over 100 million people are passionate about the sport. We need them to feel safe when they go to a match, Widodo told the BBC.
Indonesia will host the U20 World Cup in 2023.
