The drums of the Cristo monovero return to Alicante to accompany the Cristo del Mar

The drum band of theThe Crucified Christ of Monóvarreturns, one more year, to Alicante to accompany his namesake,The Christ of the Sea, in the next processionHoly Tuesday. The costaleros from Alicante will return the visit to the monoveros in the procession of theEntombment, to be held in Monóvar onHoly Friday.

This year the monoveros will again accompany the Alicante Sacramental Brotherhood of El Cristo del Mar with Our Lady of Sorrows and San Juan de la Palma, thus maintaining the existing brotherhood between both “Christs”. A brotherhood that dates back more than a decade, since both “Cristos” began a twinning that still lasts today and that has meant, for years, the support of the costaleros of El Cristo de Monóvar, as well as their gang of drums, to the Christ of the Sea.

The peak moment of this brotherhood is reflected, on Holy Tuesday, in the departure of the image of the Alicante Christ from theBasilica of Santa María in Alicante.

A band from the 50s

The Drum Band of El Cristo monoveroturns 70 this year, since it was in the 50’s when they first accompanied El Cristo in his procession of Silence, the procession opening the three drums of the time, “Pisa”, “Puiki” and “Alcolea”.

Over the years, in the late 1960s, the band took shape with the presence of Silverio Guilló, Ismael, “Macando”, José Durá “Epi” and Enrique Pérez. In the 70s the drum band was rejuvenated with the incorporation of Rafael Albert, Tomás Vidal, José Enrique Poveda, Enrique Rico, Juan Carlos Rico, Silverio Guilló Jr., Salvador Vicente, Enrique Pérez and José Carlos Gimeno Hurtado.

Over the years, El Cristo would also have a children’s drum band, becoming the Cofradía, first, and Hermandad, later, with more sound from Semana Santa Monovera.
