Artificial intelligence (AI) had a pivotal year in 2023, marked by significant advances but also by fears about its potential use. The Q* system, developed by OpenAI, could mark a step forward towards artificial general intelligence (AGI), a concept that still remains largely hypothetical. AGI symbolizes a tipping point where AI would surpass human capabilities in areas such as contextual reasoning and authentic creativity. However, the exact implications of this technology (The word technology has two de facto meanings:), as well as its feasibility, remain a subject of debate (A debate is a (constructive) discussion on a subject, precise or substantive, announced at in advance,…) among scientists.
At the same time, notable progress has been made in the application of AI for medical and scientific purposes. For example, some AI models are capable of detecting a high risk of lung cancer from a simple x-ray. all the techniques for taking photographs of…) lung (Lungfish are plants of the Boraginaceae family belonging to the genus…). During the COVID-19 pandemic, an algorithm was developed to diagnose the virus by analyzing subtle differences in people’s coughs. The AI also played a role in the design of experiments in quantum physics.
However, advances in AI are not without risks. Deepfakes, entirely fabricated content imitating real images or videos, represent a major cyber threat, particularly because of their potential to influence elections. Advances in creating deepfakes in real time and the generation of hyper-realistic human faces raise concerns about people’s ability to distinguish between true from false.
In the military field, the integration of AI into weapons systems also raises questions. AI-enabled drones capable of recognizing and tracking targets, and even lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS), also known as “killer robots,” are under development. Although this technology has not yet been widely deployed, some recent events suggest that we may be at the dawn of a new era (A New Era (1/2) and A New Era (2/2) are episodes of the series…) of the AI war.
These developments highlight the double edge of AI: a promising technology for scientific and medical advancement, but also a potential source of new and complex security and ethics threats.
