Both the FBI and Florida police are now searching for the 23-year-old, who according to the family has not been seen for three days, writes Reuters.
– We have tried to talk to both Brian and his family all week, and now they called us on Friday. “We went to their home and they now say they have not seen their son,” North Port Police spokesman Josh Taylor told CNN Friday night.
– We are now working on this information. This is a new dispute in the case, he continues.
Has refused to cooperate
The Laundrie family’s lawyer, Steven Bertolino, confirms the 23-year-old’s disappearance.
“At the moment, the FBI is looking for both Gabby and Brian,” he told the channel.
The disappearance mystery, which has now taken a new turn, has received massive media attention in the United States in recent days.
Brian Laundrie and his girlfriend Gabby Petito went on a road trip in July, with plans to cross the United States. Originally, the couple was to return in October, but in early September Laundrie returned home alone.
The latest development, with Laundrie’s disappearance, however, has been criticized by the family lawyer of the relatives of the missing Gabby. CNN reports Saturday night that attorney Richard Stafford denies that Laundrie has disappeared.
– He has not disappeared. He’s hiding. Gabby is the only one who is missing, Stafford states.
–
Gabby Petito has not given a sign of life since a text message to the family at the end of August, and on September 11, they chose to report her missing.
Police refer to the fiancé as a person of “interest”, but he has refused to cooperate, according to the news agency AP.
The police are frustrated
On Friday, the FBI conducted investigations at Laundrie’s home, where they checked a silver Ford Mustang parked in the driveway.
Outside the Laundrie house, several people had gathered demanding that the 23-year-old be arrested, writes Reuters.
However, Laundrie is not charged with any crime, and the police are not convinced that anything criminal has taken place, according to the news agency AP.
The Laundrie family’s lawyer has advised that neither Brian Laundrie nor his family speak to the police, on the grounds that the police can use this against him at a later date, regardless of whether he has anything to do with the disappearance.
– We understand the frustration of the local community. We are also frustrated, said Josh Taylor of the North Port Police in a statement.
For six days, the police and the FBI have asked the family to contact the police in connection with Brian’s fiancé Gabby Petito. Friday is the first time they have had a thorough conversation with the investigators, he continues.
It is a clearly upset Petito who is caught by the cameras American police wear on the uniform.
– We’ve been arguing this morning. Some personal stuff, she says.
Laundrie, for his part, says that the couple started pushing when he got into the car with dirty feet. He also makes it clear that he did not want to report Petito for violence. The police officers on the spot make it clear that it is Petito they perceive as the aggressive in the quarrel.
Filmed by police before Gabby disappeared
– I will not pursue anything because she is my fiance, and I love her. It was just an argument. Sorry it got so public, Laundrie says.
Police also did not report the couple, but made sure they stayed separately the following night. Laundrie checked into a motel while Petito slept in the camper.
Critical questions
According to police, Petito was last in contact with the family in late August from Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Video cameras also captured Petito as she and her boyfriend checked out of a Salt Lake City hotel on Aug. 24. Police believe they then went to Grand Teton National Park.
However, Laundrie drove the car, a Ford Transit, home to Florida on September 1. Ten days later, on September 11, Petito’s family reported the daughter missing.
Through interviews in the media, as well as official letters, Gabby Petio’s parents have begged both Brian Laundrie and his family to cooperate with the police.
– Brian refuses to tell Gabby’s family where he last saw her. Brian also refuses to explain why he left Gabby all alone and drove her car to Florida. These are critical questions that require immediate answers, the family said in a statement earlier this week.
Police are now also investigating whether there is a possible connection between Petito’s disappearance and the unsolved murders of two women at a camping area in Moab. The two women were found shot on August 18, six days after police stopped Laundrie and Petito in the area.
