The data show how much chance you have of getting covid after vaccination

Since the start of vaccination at the end of last December, more than 5.1 million first doses have been vaccinated so far. More than 3.7 million people already have complete coronavirus vaccination. Even so, some of them later became ill with covid.

According to current data from the Institute of Health Information and Statistics (IHIS), which have News available, the infection was confirmed in 22,078 people who received the first dose of the vaccine. Relative to the total number of first doses vaccinated, this figure corresponds to 1.08 percent.

However, the data provided after the second dose give more evidence of the protection provided. Within fourteen days of application, the disease manifested itself in 1802 people, which corresponds to 0.06 percent. After more than 14 days, positivity was recorded in 2040 people (0.07 percent). A severe course occurred in a total of 273 people, ie about one per mille infected after the second dose of vaccine.

“Comprehensive available data show that vaccination is very effective in protecting against subsequent infections and especially against the severe course of the disease. This is especially true after the second dose. Infections detected after vaccination represent only a negligible proportion of all newly confirmed cases, “Ladislav Dušek, director of ÚZIS, told Novinka. He added that some of the positive ones after vaccination could become infected at the time of the dose or shortly after, when the vaccine did not yet adequately protect the person.

No vaccine is 100% effective, but the effectiveness is high

Some people who refuse vaccination or question its effectiveness argue that there are cases where people become infected or end up in hospital after vaccination, and the vaccine has not protected them. In this context, however, it should be noted that none of the vaccines is 100% effective, so the vaccine cannot be fully protected in all cases.

Modern mRNA vaccines, including the most widely used Pfizer / BioNTech in the Czech Republic and the American Moderna, have an efficiency of about 93 percent. AstraZeneca or single-dose Johnson and Johnson have a slightly lower effectiveness.

Thus, there is a chance that a person will become infected with coronavirus after vaccination. If this happens, the vaccine largely protects against a severe course or subsequent death, as Dušek himself or some other experts have previously pointed out.

Current data show that the vast majority of infected people who end up in hospital after a difficult course of vaccination are elderly.

About 82 percent of all severe episodes after the first dose are people over the age of 65, more than 50 percent of them are people over the age of 80. Even after the second dose, almost 70 percent of severe cases occurred in the age group over 80 years.

“This is justified by their general health condition, when they suffer from a number of chronic diseases associated with old age,” Dušek explained.

The number of newly arrived covid patients in hospitals, especially those in the elderly, who belong to the most at-risk groups, also testifies to the fact that vaccines work. In the last 14 days, there were 77 newly infected seniors over 65 and 41 positive in the group over 75. As of July 10, there were 25 covid patients in the hospitals, seven of them in the ICU and two in artificial lung ventilation.

Vaccines also largely prevent the spread of covid in the population, the more people are immune to the disease, the more the number of people susceptible to the infection is reduced, and therefore the possibility of spread is reduced. That’s why the government has repeatedly called on the public to be vaccinated against coronavirus so that we can achieve collective immunity in the fall and return to a normal way of life without any dramatic restrictions, as has been the case in recent months.
