The COVID-19 Pandemic Realizes the Need for a New Paradigm to Synergize Globally

Fimela.com, Jakarta The COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing in Indonesia, even though the increase in cases is happening at a very high rate in the last two weeks. This pandemic is increasingly making us aware of the need for a new paradigm on how global synergies must be built and encourage the creation of unprecedented opportunities to jointly build a better world.

For this reason, we need to refocus strategies and all resources in an adaptive manner to fight COVID-19, while at the same time responding to the demand to implement inherent policies and sustainable steps that can be taken by governments and businesses, to achieve the “Sustainable Development Goals” (TPB). /SDGs).

This was stated by the Minister of SOEs Erick Thohir in a virtual keynote address delivered at the United Nations Global Compact Leaders Summit 2021 on Wednesday, June 16 at 12:00 WIB (NY at 01:00 AM EST).

As an effort to strengthen Indonesia’s commitment at the global level to the commitment to achieving the SDGs, Erick Thohir outlines the important role of SOEs.

“Besides being a profit-oriented company, BUMN also acts as an agent of development and has a special mission to provide public services for the welfare of the Indonesian people. This dual role is even more important at this difficult time in the COVID-19 pandemic that we are experiencing right now. The transformation of SOEs by highlighting the implementation of GCG, SDGs and the COVID-19 response is a linked activity that cannot be separated,” he stressed Erick Thohir.

Erick further described the strategic steps in implementing the transformation of SOEs. To improve the resilience and competitiveness of SOEs, there will be a restructuring of industrial clusters from 27 to 12 and business portfolios from 145 to 41 until 2023.

Furthermore, SOEs are committed to promoting the implementation of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) in line with SDG 19 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), implementing the ISO 37001 Anti Bribery Management System and centralized management to reduce the fiscal burden of SOEs.

Also attracting attention is Erick’s statement on Gender Equality (SDG 5) in which he targets to increase the number of women in leadership positions by 15% this year and 20% in 2023, as an indicator of the performance of directors in all SOEs. . To note, in addition to Climate Action, the Gender Equality Target is also the focus of the United Nations.

In addition to the social protection and assistance program activities carried out by the government, Erick specifically also set PLN to apply special electricity tariffs for 10 million households below the poverty line and 34 million other underprivileged households.

At the end of his speech, Erick expressed his optimism that the public and private sectors can collaborate for transformative action, as well as SOEs and private businesses can mobilize action, determination, and resources to achieve the SDGs.

The UN Global Compact Leaders Summit 2021 will be held again virtually and bring together more than 20,000 business leaders, Government, UN, and Civil Society.
